Architect David R. Jones of Madison designed this Victorian Gothic edifice, originally known as Assembly Hall, in 1878 to house an 800-seat theater, a library, and a clock tower. The structure, which was dedicated on March 2, 1880, was originally used for conventions, dances, and commencement ceremonies in addition to its principal function as a library. In 1900, a portion of the hall was assigned to the School of Music after the library moved to a new facility on campus. The structure was renamed Music Hall in 1910, shortly after repairs in the early 1900s. It is still a significant music venue, as well as the home of the university opera. The Department of Urology is also housed in this building.
