Touro University Nevada
Touro University Nevada is a Jewish-sponsored institution that offers graduate programs in a number of areas, including nursing, education, physician assistant studies and physical and occupational therapy. It’s accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. The Touro University Nevada College of Osteopathic Medicine (TUNCOM) is the first osteopathic school in the state.

Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine
This four-year program provides education in osteopathic manipulative medicine, a holistic form of medicine using hands-on techniques to improve bodily function and alleviate pain. Admission to the DO program, like most MD programs, requires Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) scores, an onsite interview and coursework in biology, inorganic and organic chemistry and physics.

The first two years of this program center on basic and clinical sciences, while the final two years focus on clinical training in combination with lectures. Rotations in family medicine, pediatrics, women’s health, internal medicine, general surgery and emergency medicine can be expected. Clinical clerkships take place in the Las Vegas valley and include experiences in in- and outpatient services. The majority of graduates work in pediatrics, family practice or general internal medicine.

Loma Linda University
Loma Linda University is a Seventh Day Adventist institution that offers programs in medicine, dentistry, nursing, allied health and religion. Medical degree programs are offered through the School of Medicine.

Doctor of Medicine
This program integrates ethical and religious courses with the basic instruction required to practice medicine. In the first and second years, students take courses in the sciences, religion and human behavior. The second half of this four-year program addresses patient care through lectures and clinical experiences. Their third year, students participate in clinical rotations in gynecology, psychiatry, surgery, family medicine, among others. The fourth year involves advanced training in surgery and medicine, as well as student electives.

Doctor of Medicine/Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
Also known as the Medical Scientist Program (MSP), this program trains medical students to conduct research in fields related to medicine. Students complete rotations in both research and clinical science after the first two years of medical study. This program takes eight years of intensive study to complete all laboratory, clinical and research requirements. Students must apply to each program separately.

University of Nevada – Reno
The University of Nevada – Reno (UN) offers programs in medicine, social work and nursing through its Division of Health Sciences. This division is also home to the Sanford Center for Aging, the Nevada Center for Ethics and Health Policy and the Center for Application of Substance Abuse Technologies.

Bachelor of Science/Doctor of Medicine
This seven-year program allows students to earn an undergraduate degree in combination with a Doctor of Medicine at an accelerated rate. Only a small number of students are accepted to this program each year. They have three years to complete all undergraduate curriculum requirements. Students will be awarded their bachelor’s degree once they’ve successfully completed their coursework and their first year of medical school.

Doctor of Medicine
The curriculum for the first two years of the MD program focuses on the study of medicine from a clinical context and includes limited lecture hours. During the third year of the program, students gain clinical experience through six clerkships in the fields of surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, family medicine, internal medicine, psychiatry and pediatric medicine. Advanced clinical rotations in rural health are required during the fourth year of study.

Doctor of Medicine/Master of Public Health (MPH)
This joint-degree program offers concentrations in the following areas: biostatistics, epidemiology, social and behavioral health, health administration and policy, and public health practice. The core curriculum provides introductory coursework in these areas and students complete at least 21 credits within their emphasis area. A capstone and practicum are also required. MCAT scores can be used for admission in place of those from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).

Doctor of Medicine/Master of Business Administration (MBA)
The MD/MBA program at the University of Nevada is a personalized option for students wanting to embark on a career related to health care administration. This joint-degree option is offered in partnership with the College of Business, and the MBA portion of the program is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). Students must complete the first two years of medical school before beginning the MBA program’s intensive one-year curriculum. After completing all MBA program requirements, students return to medical school to complete two years of clinical training.

Doctor of Medicine/Doctor of Philosophy
This medical scientist program prepares students for careers in research or teaching by helping them develop strong analytical and experimental design skills. There are several concentration options for the PhD portion of this program, including molecular biology, biomedical engineering, molecular pharmacology and audiology. Research options include cancer biology, plasma physics, neuroscience, infectious disease, electrophysiology and molecular biology.

Throughout the Las Vegas Valley, clubs and associations hold monthly meetings with speakers. One of those associations is the Clark County Association of Health Underwriters (CCAHU). The insurance brokers who sell health care policies in the valley join the association โ€œto promote ethical practices and generate awareness of health insurance industry issues through education, legislation, advocacy and involvement.โ€

The June meeting of the association, held at Sierra Gold on South Jones Blvd. in Las Vegas, was a business meeting installing the next yearโ€™s officers and committee chairpersons, but it also featured a talk by Bruce Z. Morgenstern, M.D., Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs at Roseman University of Health Sciences, College of Medicine. His talk was titled โ€œAnd Then There Were THREE Medical Schoolsโ€.

Morgenstern was the perfect luncheon speaker, keeping to a tight schedule, but talking quickly and conveying a good deal of information, adding humor and showing illustrations that brought home the information.

The three medical schools in the topic included two new medical schools currently in the process of securing accreditation: one at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas (UNLV) and one at Morgensternโ€™s Roseman University. The third school is Touro University Nevada College of Osteopathic Medicine which has been training doctors of osteopathy since 2004.

Why the need for more medical schools? Morgenstern presented figures noting that in the number of doctors per 100,000 people, Nevada is in โ€œdire straightsโ€ when it comes to the number of available physicians. The state ranks 47th in the country. The number of psychiatrists ranks 49th.

He also pointed out that 25 % of Nevadaโ€™s current physicians are over 60 years of age.

Is it easy to establish more medical schools? Morgenstern explained that the cost to meet regulations, build and equip a new medical school ranges between $150 million and $1 billion, the higher figure coming when a medical campus also includes a hospital.

He talked about a medical career being one of โ€œdelayed gratificationโ€ in that the typical medical student first spends four years in college and four years in medical school. Then when the student has his M.D. degree, which Morgenstern defines as โ€œmostly a doctorโ€, the average student has $183,000 in debt, and more education to come. Next is three to five years in a residency program and, possibly, additional years in specialty training. Morgenstern suggested that well-regarded neurosurgeon (and recent Presidential candidate) Ben Carson very likely was 35 or 36 years old before he completed all his training.

Both UNLV and Roseman, with proper accreditation, could see the first class of medical students enter training next August with the first graduating classes getting degrees in 2021.

Dr. Mark Penn, chancellor of Roseman University, also attended the meeting and answered a question from the audience regarding whether students educated at local medical schools would stay to practice in the area.

He cited the following information:

*If a student gets their medical education in Nevada, the chances of him or her practicing in Nevada is about one in three.

  • If a student does residency in Nevada, but not medical school, the chances of him or her practicing in Nevada is one in two.
  • If a student goes to medical school in Nevada and does his or her residency in Nevada, the chances of that physician staying in the state is about 65 percent.

Then again, Penn pointed out another problem, and that is Nevadaโ€™s overall education system and finding qualified students to apply to local medical schools, once they are all up in running.

He noted that last year 269 Nevada students applied to medical schools around the country. (Three times as many applications came from Utah.) Only one-third of the Nevada applicants were accepted. He said building a pipeline of students interested and qualified for a medical education is critical in coming years.

For readers unfamiliar with Roseman University of Health Sciences, the school was originally founded in 1991 by Dr. Harry Rosenberg as a pharmacy school. The university today has a College of Pharmacy, a College of Nursing, a College of Dental Medicine and offers a Masters of Business Administration and Pharmacy and Dental Continuing Education Programs. Roseman has campuses in Henderson and Summerlin, Nevada and in South Jordan, Utah. Rosemanโ€™s proposed College of Medicine has been approved as a candidate for accreditation by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), a major step forward in the development of a non-profit, private LCME-accredited medical school in Southern Nevada.
