The Harvard Design School is located on a distinctive urban campus, one of the oldest in the country. The public health crisis occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic has caused unprecedented social and economic disruption worldwide, in the United States, and in the Boston/Cambridge area. Anticipating that continued in-person, on-campus instruction would increase the risk of infections in our community, the University acted promptly in March 2020 to โde-densifyโ its campus and transition to online instruction. Harvard reached this decision after careful (but time-pressed) deliberation, drawing on insights and expertise from public health experts worldwide โ including on the Harvard faculty.
As we looked ahead to the fall 2020 and beyond, we are planning for several contingency scenarios that would protect the health and safety of our community, preserve our ability to adapt to evolving circumstances, and ensure the continuity of our teaching and research mission.
The GSD continues to retain the discretion to apply its considered judgment to the question of how best to pursue its educational programs during the COVID-19 crisis, which may include, among other things, making recourse to online instruction and instituting compulsory testing and tracing programs as required conditions for accessing the Harvard campus or Harvard facilities.
Student Activity Fee
The student activity fee supports the GSD Student Forum and student organization activities. The $85 activity fee for the fall 2020 semester will be waived*.
Health Fees
The health services and health insurance fees are charged to all enrolled students. See Harvard University Health Services for more information about the health fees, and for the option to waive health insurance if you have your own coverage.

All GSAS students are charged tuition based on a tiered tuition structure that reduces over time as students progress through their degree program. Students in PhD programs and some master’s programs receive grants and fellowships that cover this cost.
PhD and Masterโs Students
Students are required to register continuously from the time they enter a degree program until they receive their degree. Nonresident students with Leave of Absence or Traveling Scholar status are charged, at minimum, the active file fee (see the chart below).

This estimated budget does not include costs of travel or summer support, fees for required tests, application fees, or such initial expenses as home furnishings. Your individual expenses may vary from these figures. Funding and aid are available to meet these costs.
*Due to social distancing measures in place because of the COVID-19 pandemic, housing cannot be guaranteed for the 2021-2022 academic year. Incoming and returning GSAS students who apply by the priority deadline will be entered into a lottery, and assignments will be made based on lottery results. The Office of Residential Life will prioritize incoming G1 students if possible.
Special Students
Special students engage in coursework or a combination of coursework and research for academic credit for one term or one year only. While not candidates for any degree, special students are admitted to GSAS and access student privileges, which includes a Harvard transcript with coursework and grades listed. Full tuition and student health fees are charged; GSAS does not offer financial aid, work-study opportunities, or student loans to special students. Audited courses and supervised independent research projects are charged the same tuition as courses for credit.
Payment of tuition and fees is due prior to registration.

Visiting Fellows
Scholars intending to conduct independent research who hold a doctorate, have equivalent professional experience, or are advanced doctoral candidates who have completed all required coursework may register at GSAS as a visiting fellow. Visiting fellows are considered full-time research students, access Harvard Universityโs libraries and facilities, and may apply for membership in the Harvard Faculty Club. Reduced tuition and student health fees are charged; GSAS does not offer financial aid, work-study opportunities, or student loans to visiting fellows. Tuition cannot be waived or prorated and is non-refundable.
