The Leeds Beckett University MSc Occupational Therapy is a one-year full-time programme, designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge you need to become an occupational therapist.

As a student on this course, you will be taught by lecturers who are experts in their field and have worked as occupational therapists in clinical practice. You will learn about a range of topics, including:

• Theoretical perspectives on disability and impairment

• Developmental assessment and intervention

• Specialist areas such as working with people with sensory impairments or mental health problems

Gain the skills to become a professional occupational therapist, able to deliver and evaluate occupational therapy in a range of settings.

This programme is underpinned by an understanding of humans as occupational beings, the relationship between occupation and health, models of occupation, occupational science and occupational justice.

You will learn how to carry out occupational therapy assessments and interventions with people from across the lifespan and with a range of physical, mental and social difficulties, such as dementia, stroke, homelessness or unemployment. Your learning experience will include problem-based tutorials, journal clubs, creative and practical sessions, self-directed learning and research. You will be required to undertake a minimum of 1,000 hours of professional practice under the supervision and direction of experienced occupational therapists.

This course is accredited by the Royal College of Occupational Therapists and is a World Federation of Occupational Therapists Approved Education Programme.

Upon graduation, you will be eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council as an occupational therapist.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Applicants should normally have at least a second class honours degree completed in the last five years in the cognate subjects of Science, Social Sciences, Healthcare (including degrees in related health and social care professions), Psychology, Philosophy, Sociology, History, Politics, Environment or Arts. Applicants who do not have English as their first language are required to have IELTS 7.0 with no skill below 6.5 or an equivalent award.

Applicants will also need to demonstrate in their application:

  1. An understanding of the philosophy, practice and scope of occupational therapy
  2. Appropriate work experience/shadowing
  3. The attitudes, behaviours and values of care and compassion
  4. Evidence of self-direction and motivation
  5. Effective communication skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team

Satisfactory health and enhanced criminal history checks will be required by all applicants prior to acceptance on the course, these will be in line with professional body membership and HCPC registration requirements.

This MSc Occupational Therapy course will give you the knowledge and skills to work as an occupational therapist in the UK and internationally. You will gain a thorough understanding of the principles underpinning the profession, including psychological theories, human development, health and social care.

You will develop skills in occupational therapy assessment and intervention, which are essential for working with patients to help them function more effectively within their daily lives. You will also develop your research skills so that you can undertake original research into practice issues.

In order to complete this course, students must attend on campus at least once per year during their studies.
