Academic Requirements: MCAT and GPA


Applicants must have a Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) score prior to application consideration and the October 31 deadline. Please check the available dates for taking the MCAT.

Both MCAT and GPA will be used as components in our holistic evaluation. We require a minimum MCAT score of 498 out of a possible 528. MCAT scores cannot be more than 3 years old in January of the year of expected enrollment. The best eligible score will be used for the admission process. We do not have a minimum GPA requirement. Carle Illinois does not consider scores on the individual sections of the MCAT.

At Carle Illinois we evaluate competency, which is a much broader concept than pre-requisites. The UI College of Medicine offers a full-time M.D. program that prepares students to become physicians and health professionals. Forty-eight new medical students recently began their journey at the Carle Illinois College of Medicine at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Students from the Class of 2024 come from a range of academic disciplines: 85.5% have an engineering background, and 14.5% come from the basic sciences, with degrees in areas such as chemistry, biomathematics, biophysics, computer science, and cell biology. Nine students hold an advanced degree, consisting of three doctorate degrees and six masterโ€™s degrees.

โ€œLike the two classes before them, this talented cohort of future physician-innovators met challenging admission requirements that go beyond the typical premedical track. The majority have backgrounds in engineering, advanced mathematics, computer science and other quantitative disciplines,โ€ said Dr. King Li, dean of the college.

Carle Illinois College of Medicine has selected 48 students to be a part of the Class of 2024. The college received approximately 3,000 primary applications and will graduate 240 students in May 2024.

The class is diverse, with students representing many states and countries around the world. California has the highest number of students with nine members, followed by Illinois with eight students. There are also seven students from New York, four from Maryland, three from Georgia and two from Kansas. This year’s class is 14% racial and ethnic minorities underrepresented in medicine (African American, Latinx and mixed race/ethnicity). Just over 8% are African American; 4% are Latinx; 2% are of mixed race or ethnicity. There is an even split between men and women with 52% male students and 48% female students.
