ST Andrews University Overview

St Andrews University is one of the most prestigious universities in the world, and it’s also one of the most international. The school is located in Scotland, and its acceptance rate for international students is lower than that of any other university in the country. St Andrews accepts just over half of its international applicants—a lot less than its overall acceptance rate of 83%. This means that if you want to go to St Andrews, you might have a better chance at being accepted if you’re not applying from outside of Europe!

Fitness to practise
Medical students are expected to behave with the utmost integrity from the very start of their training.

At the start of each year, medical students at St Andrews are required to submit a signed declaration (Medical School Agreement) which indicates what is expected of young professionals in training. If a student’s conduct falls below acceptable standards, this could lead to a student being referred to the Professionalism and Welfare Committee or the Fitness to Practise Committee. Included in this declaration is a requirement for students to consent to being videoed as part of their training in clinical medicine. Applicants should read the document carefully before accepting an offer from St Andrews.

Concerns about fitness to practise may be raised as part of the procedures for admitting potential students to a medical programme. When considering applications, concerns about health or previous conduct or both may be considered at the time of application or prior to entry to the medical course. About St Andrews Course Structure

Flexible degree structure
The University of St Andrews operates on a modular degree system by which degrees are obtained through the accumulation of credits. The University’s modular degree system makes undergraduate study here very flexible, and our module requirements are the same whether you are studying full time or part time.

A module is a self-contained unit of teaching, learning and assessment which is worth a fixed amount of credit. Most modules run for just one semester, and every module passed will gain you a set number of credits that will count towards your degree.

To gain an Honours degree, you will need to obtain 480 credits; to gain a General degree, you will need 360 credits. Full-time students will usually take 120 credits’ worth of modules per year, which is typically 60 credits per semester. Part-time students will study half this number of credits per year.

You will be required to take a number of specified modules to gain a specialised Honours degree, but you will also have opportunities during your study to take subjects outside of your own Faculty. You may be able to take up to 80 credits in total from another Faculty, though this will depend on the popularity and availability of the modules you wish to take.
