Academics

UC San Diego is widely regarded by students as โ€œone of the top science universities in the United States.โ€ As a result, the school attracts bright students who benefit from โ€œaccess to cutting edge technology and theoriesโ€ and โ€œgreat opportunities for undergraduates to do research.โ€ Professors โ€œare incredibly knowledgeable about their material, and many of them are actively doing research in their field.โ€ Research opportunities are widely available to undergraduate science majors. However, sciences are not the only attraction here. The university is home to six colleges, a system that students say is โ€œa great way to not feel like a small fish in a huge ocean.โ€ Whereas it might seem like some science professors โ€œare more interested in research than teaching,โ€ students say, โ€œHumanities professors tend to be more accessible and more interested in their students as well as what they are teaching.โ€ Overall, however, โ€œprofessors are very helpful and willing to take extra time to help students understand material.โ€ Given the fact that this is a large public university, students say, โ€œProfessors are extremely willing to help and mentor students if you seek them out.โ€ Another major benefit to attending a large university is that โ€œthere are a lot of resources, and there is always a faculty member or organization that will help you achieve what you want.โ€ Students say, โ€œThis university will undoubtedly set the new standard of what it means to be an elite public university in the years to come.โ€

Student Body

The typical student at UC San Diego โ€œis a little nerdy and studies a lot.โ€ โ€œDoing well academically at UC San Diego is an extreme priority, even to students who are not good students. Most of the students are geared toward extended education or professional school.โ€ However, โ€œthere are plenty of students who balance academics with other things, like sports or clubs.โ€ The student body โ€œhas such a diverse range of personalitiesโ€ that almost anyone โ€œcan fit in here because itโ€™s such a big school, and there are so many different organizations and places where you can find people that enjoy the same things as you.โ€ Students say that the population of students in the humanities has been growing โ€œrapidlyโ€ in recent years, but some still see room for improvement among the diversity of the student body. There are those who would love โ€œto see more students become socially consciousโ€ to enhance the overall student body experience on campus.

Campus Life

Students love to take advantage of UC San Diegoโ€™s โ€œunbeatable location,โ€ ten minutes from the beach and a quick ride away from downtown San Diego. It is easy to enjoy โ€œall the nature around the campus by hiking, biking, [and] camping,โ€ or taking surf lessons, which โ€œare offered on campus for a modest fee.โ€ It is also โ€œsuper easy to get to San Diego proper for a fun night out.โ€ There is a perception that social life is somewhat lacking on the campus itself, which may be the result of UC San Diego being such a large, academically intensive school. While some students have trouble fitting a social life into their busy study schedules, others say that, in fact, there are โ€œtons of resources and ways to get involvedโ€ on campus; students โ€œjust have to actively seek them.โ€ Plenty of people โ€œplay sports or participate in clubs.โ€ โ€œLots of people enjoy … small parties but the party scene isnโ€™t too big here.โ€ In the spring, the Sun God Festival is โ€œalways a popular eventโ€ that brings the entire campus together. There โ€œis not really a huge emphasis on the athletics department,โ€ much to the annoyance of some students. However, students who make the most of their experience here maintain, โ€œThere is always an event going on and so many clubs to be involved in. From the Greek life, to the intramural sports, to the variety of clubs, there is literally a place for everyone.โ€Read Less
