The following list of optometry schools covers many countries, although the list is not exhaustive. Internationally, optometry as a profession includes different levels of education. The institutions listed below provide academic and professional education and clinical training that ranges from Doctor of Optometry degree level to other professional degrees in optometry and also non-degree level education leading to a diploma or other qualifications in optometry.
Optometry is defined in the UK by the Opticians Act 1989, which is a statute that sets out the regulated professions of optometrists and dispensing opticians. The profession of optometry came into existence in 1921, when the first school and regulating body were established.[2]The scope of practice for UK optometrists is determined by the General Optical Council (GOC) and the Optical Order 2010. In the UK optometrists are regulated by the GOC.
As a result of this regulation, there are two things to be aware of:
First, no one can legally do what an optometrist does unless s/he is registered with the GOC. Second, any optometrist who provides services without having met the requirements of a professional registration body cannot be held liable for negligence.
