FAQ on MPH Programs That Don’t Require GRE

I’m surprised that some graduate schools don’t require the GRE. Does this mean that the people that apply to these programs are not as well prepared academically?

Schools sometimes will waive the GRE for certain situations. In the Master of Public Health programs they require other things from their students or simply use criteria that does not include the GRE to grant admission. Requirements may include high GPAs and grades in particular courses, high scores on other exams, or letters from previous schools attended noting good academic standing. In addition, in some cases, schools may recommend students take the GRE without it being a requirement.  Every program is different, so explore your options and choose what works best for your individual needs.

What are other admission requirements for MPH programs that don’t require GRE?

Types of Online MPH Program GRE Requirements

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is used by most universities that offer graduate-level programs. This examination tests students’ abilities in verbal reasoning, analytical writing, and quantitative reasoning. During the examination, students may be expected to exhibit their writing, mathematical, and critical thinking skills. The results of this examination can provide schools with a better idea of where students stand in terms of these standard educational skills.

The verbal and quantitative portions of the GRE are scored between 130–170 and the analytical writing section is scored between 0 and 6 in half-point increments. With verbal scores between 158-170, quantitative scores between 159-170, and the writing score of 4.5-6.0, students will be placed in a highly competitive place in admissions.
