Applicants for admission must hold an MBChB degree or equivalent medical degree.

The nature of the research project must require the candidate to have specialist clinical knowledge and/or skills in order to complete at least one aspect (e.g. recruitment/assessment of patients, acquisition of experimental samples, experimental procedures, interpretation of findings) of the study. Consequently, it is expected that all MD candidates will have a clinician as part of the supervisory team.

Medicine

Academic entry qualification overview

Applicants for admission must hold an MBChB degree or equivalent medical degree.

Applicants (including international students) will need to be working in the NHS already and have identified a supervisor and project in order to apply.

English language

For applicants whose first language is not English, or if you have not studied recently in the UK, you must supply an official IELTS or TOEFL transcript to support your application, or provide a date on which you will be taking a test.

If your IELTS or TOEFL expires before the start of your programme, you will need to take another official English test before we can issue you with a CAS for your visa application. This is a requirement of UKVI.

We require a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 overall or TOEFL (iBT) 90.

Each component of the English test should meet the minimum requirement of IELTS 5.5 in all components or 22 in TOEFL (iBT). For the writing component in IELTS we expect that you have achieved a minimum of 6.0.

Interview requirements

Candidates will be required to attend an interview with their prospective supervisor as well as a Postgraduate Tutor. If it is not possible for you to attend in person, we are able to interview by Skype/video conferencing.

Programme description

Our MD Medicine programme enables you to undertake a research project that will improve understanding of Medicine.

MD study at The University of Manchester is a challenging yet rewarding experience. You will have access to first-class facilities and work within a vibrant research community across the University and partner NHS Trust sites.

There are opportunities for MD students to transfer to the PhD programme following rigorous assessment at the end-of-year report stage of the programme. Any transfer to the PhD programme is dependent on continued funding for the period of the programme and your capacity to complete the extended PhD programme before any return to your clinical duties.

Applicants who are classified as overseas for tuition fee purposes may be eligible to pay the equivalent Home tuition fee rate. To qualify for this, applicants must hold a valid NHS contract with a University of Manchester affiliated NHS Trust for each full 12-month registration period. Applicants should note that this subsidised fee can only be applied to the MD programme and any change of programme will require the full international fee to be paid.

Applicants whose medical training was undertaken outside of the UK/Ireland must hold a medical qualification that is recognised for registration by the General Medical Council of the United Kingdom and be currently working in the NHS with a potential supervisor.

North West Deanery trainees

The University of Manchester and its partner NHS Trusts have a wide range of research opportunities for North West Deanery trainees. Trainees need to have sufficient time out of the programme to fulfil the specified time commitment required for registration on an MD programme.

Trainees registered on a full-time research programme may, with approval from their supervisory team, undertake clinical duties limited to one clinical session per week and occasional weekend on-call duties.

Projects

MD projects may be specified in advance, with applications encouraged for pre-defined research studies. Alternatively, we encourage research proposals from applicants seeking MD places through direct contact with academics and research groups.

Often, the most rewarding projects are those developed in partnership between applicants and potential supervisors in overlapping areas of interest.

Training and development

All of our postgraduate research students attend the Doctoral Academy Training Programme delivered by the Centre for Academic and Researcher Development (CARD).

The programme provides key transferable skills in areas such as commercial awareness, academic writing and public engagement. This training equips our postgraduates with the tools to progress beyond their research degree into influential positions within academia, industry and consultancy.

The emphasis is on enhancing skills critical to developing early-stage researchers and professionals, whether they relate to effective communication, disseminating research findings and project management skills.

Course Info

The Master of Medicine (MMed) is a comprehensive 2-year medical training programme providing structured postgraduate training in General Medicine leading to the award of a Master of Medicine from the University of Buckingham.

It is designed to deliver core training for speciality training by the acquisition of knowledge and skills as assessed by the workplace based assessments and the MRCP. The programme is broad-based consisting of four to six placements in medical specialities. These placements must include direct involvement in the acute medical take.

The key features of the MMed are:

Student-led – we will use an ePortfolio to encourage a learner-centred approach with the support of Educational Supervisors. The ePortfolio contains tools to identify educational needs, enables the setting of learning goals, reflective learning and personal development.
Competency-based – the curricula outline competencies that trainees must reach by the end of the programme. The curriculum is directly linked to the ePortfolio as it defines standards required for good medical practice and formal assessments including the MRCP exams.
Continuation of Good Medical Practice – building on existing training the curriculum contains important emphasis on generic competencies necessary for practice as a physician.
Supervision – each student has a series of people with clearly defined roles and responsibilities overseeing their training including Clinical Supervisor, Educational Supervisor, University Tutor, Pathways to Postgraduate Training in Medicine Director, and Dean of Postgraduate Medicine.
Appraisal meetings with supervisor – regular appraisal meetings and review of competence progression are set out in the ePortfolio.
Dissertation – Literature review 10,000 words.
Workplace-based assessments – regular workplace-based assessments are conducted throughout training. These include the Acute Care Assessment Tool (ACAT), Case-Based Discussion (CbD), mini-Clinical Evaluation Exercise (mini-CEX) and multisource feedback (MSF) with additional assessment methods to assess Audit (AA).
MRCP examination – the various parts of our curriculum have been mapped to the MRCP (UK) curriculum and this provides a knowledge base assessment.

The current training hospitals are Milton Keynes University Hospital, Blackpool Teaching Hospitals and University Hospital of North Durham.

Entry Requirements

Candidates need to have a primary medical degree and will need to obtain full registration with the General Medical Council ahead of starting the course. Additionally, they should also have the following:

Successfully completed one year of internship at a hospital and must supply their Certificate of Completion.
An IELTS score of 7.5, with a minimum of 7.0 in each section or an OET with an average of 440-350 overall and a minimum of 350 in each component.
Graduated from an internationally recognised medical school.
Completed their undergraduate training and be fully registered with the Medical Council in their respective countries.
Two character reference letters from any member of their medical school academic staff, OR from their current senior medical colleagues and consultants.

Teaching & Assessment

Teaching

The principle methodology will be bedside teaching. Each student will be assigned to a clinical team and will be supervised by a consultant. The student will see patients at speciality clinics and on the ward together with the supervisor. The student will also undertake medical ward duties and outpatients as defined by the hospital. There will also be on-call duties.

Students will be required to undertake self-directed reading of medical journals based on their clinical specialism in order to build up an understanding of the leading edge medical practice.

Students will be required to maintain an e-portfolio detailing their clinical experience and they will need to show reflection on that experience. The e-portfolio will be monitored by the supervisor to ensure that it meets requisite standards.

Assessment

The key assessment output is the e-portfolio which will be audited annually by an NHS appointed auditor.

Tuition fees are payable in six monthly instalments.

Payment of a minimum of the £10,000 is required within four weeks of the date shown on the offer letter to secure a place on the programme (of which up to £5,000 is non-refundable if the applicant withdraws for any reason other than a genuine visa refusal).

The remainder of the first six months’ fees would be required four weeks before the start date of the course.

Accommodation

Due to the mode of study on this course you will not normally need a room in University accommodation during your degree.

However, if you require short-term accommodation in Buckingham we would be happy to provide a list of local bed and breakfast or hotel accommodation. Alternatively, please contact our Accommodation Office for advice.
