Information about Biology Degrees
Biology is a natural science, together with chemistry and physics, and it is taught in schools of all levels. This field explores all living and non-living forms of life, from microorganisms to plants, animals and humans. Biology sub-disciplines focus on species and groups of organisms and offer an in-depth study of their growth and evolution, origin, actions and distribution around the world.
Zoology, biophysics, anthropology, histology and ecology are only some of the specializations that students choose for a Master’s degree in biology. Others may enrol in a degree programme that focuses on the foundations of modern biology, such as cell theory, evolution, genetics, homeostasis and energy. While classic biology had the cell as a centre point, today the focus of attention is on energy, as a mechanism of survival for organisms.
Graduates of a Master degree in biology enter a competitive employment market, where practical experience plays a major role. They are able to find jobs as higher education lecturers, pharmacologists, research scientists or science writers.
A PhD is the abbreviation for Doctor of philosophy. This degree is a post graduate program delivered to a high level student researcher who has done deep research in a specific field or subject.

The Tübingen International PhD Programme for the Biological Sciences of the Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology and the Friedrich Miescher Laboratory in Tübingen offers outstanding training in a broad spectrum of cutting-edge biological research fields.
Course organisation
Participation in the following activities is mandatory:
- PhD Introductory Course
In this two-week course, PhD students are introduced to the programme faculty and the institutes’ facilities. The course consists of a series of lectures and lab practicals and introduces the special techniques used in each department. It includes a workshop on Good Scientific Practice. - Thesis Advisory Committee
All PhD students must select a thesis advisory committee and present their research proposals and subsequent progress reports at least once every year. The thesis advisory committee will provide feedback on scientific, professional and career development. - PhD Symposium
The annual PhD Symposium showcases the PhD students’ research projects. It provides first-year PhD students with an overview of ongoing PhD projects as second-year PhD students present their projects on posters and final year PhD students give concise talks. A presentation by a programme alumnus provides an outside perspective on PhD research. - Your Final Year Workshop
The workshop helps students develop strategies to cope with the multitude of challenges in the last year of their PhD.
In addition, the programme also offers a number of optional courses and workshops:
- Basic Skills (Working with Images, Scientific Writing, Scientific Presentation, IT Introductory Course)
- Advanced Scientific Courses (Light Microscopy, Python Programming, R for Bioscientists, and many others)
- Advanced Skills (including Writing a Scientific Publication, Poster Design, University-level Teaching, and Thesis Writing)
- Career Workshops (Career Planning, Application Skills)
The PhD representatives organise several activities including an annual retreat, an annual Campus Career Day, sports tournaments and social events.Types of assessment
During the first thesis advisory committee meeting, the students must pass a qualifying assessment. The assessment consists of a written project proposal, an oral presentation and a scientific discussion about the thesis project.A Diploma supplement will be issuedYesInternational elements
- International guest lecturers
- Language training provided
- Training in intercultural skills
- Courses are led with foreign partners
Course-specific, integrated German language coursesNoCourse-specific, integrated English language courses No
PhD students in the programme focus on individual research projects carried out in the PhD adviser’s laboratory. Personal thesis advisory committees supervise the progress of the PhD projects. The programme provides additional training opportunities through a limited number of mandatory components and a wide selection of optional courses and activities, including retreats and career events.
In regards to the study of biological & life sciences, students may focus on one aspect of natural science or study how they work together, such as the environment and human health or biology and geology.
