University of Melbourne Vet School Overview

It’s true: only a fraction of the applicants are admitted by most selective colleges. While the process of admission is time-consuming and complex, it’s also fun and fascinating. The acceptance rate really defines the ratio of the total number of admissions to the total number of applications received. In this article, we shall refer to the acceptance rate from available data on individual university websites as enrolled applications. The lower the rate of acceptance, the more selective the school or program is. Likewise, the higher the acceptance rate, the less selective the school or program is. College acceptance rates provide only one data point for a school. Applicants should consider how many students apply to the school, average GPA and SAT scores of students at that school, enrollment rates, and other data to understand acceptance rates before applying for admission into an institution.

Melbourne DVM Program

The Melbourne DVM curriculum has been developed around five learning domains, which infuse every subject and are based around the attributes of a veterinary scientist:

1. The scientific basis of clinical practice
2. Ethics and animal welfare
3. Biosecurity and population health
4. Clinical skills
5. Personal and professional development

Melbourne Tracks program
The Tracks program prepares you best for your chosen career path. You can build professional networks in a particular area of clinical interest and gain complementary industry-ready skills and knowledge. Choose from four tracks:

  • Small animal track (pets like cats and dogs, plus exotics like rabbits, ferrets and guinea pigs)
  • Production animal track (livestock and mixed rural practice)
  • Equine track (horses)
  • Government, industry and conservation health track (wildlife health, population health, policy, research and industry)

Melbourne DVM students gain the skills to communicate and empathize with pet owners in a professional setting, first in mock consultations and clinical skills classes, then with real clients.

Advice for students studying in first half-year 2020

We acknowledge that studying remotely and the impacts of COVID-19 may adversely impact students’ performance in their studies at this time. As a result, an amendment to the Science GPA calculation for Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) entry purposes has been approved by the University’s Academic Board, specifically for students studying over this period. Applicants for the DVM will be offered the option of all or none of their relevant* studies undertaken in this first half-year period being included in the calculation of their Science GPA. Applicants will be asked to indicate their choice during the application process and/or contacted directly by the Faculty.

Students with subject marks provided on a pass/fail basis should note that conversion of these marks will be made in accordance with the existing process (as outlined in 1.2.4 of the Selection Guidelines) – “If grades only (ie. without numeric marks) are included on a transcript and these represent marks within a range, the lowest mark on the range is assumed”. This means that a “pass” will generally be denoted with a mark of 50.

* Relevant studies for the purpose of a DVM Science GPA (SGPA) calculation (2021-22 intake) are studies undertaken at penultimate and final year level and deal with the scientific basis of physical or biological sciences (as determined by the Selection Committee).
