The following IB Math courses will satisfy the Calculus and Advanced Functions prerequisites for science and business programs: Mathematics: Applications and Interpretations HL; Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches SL; and Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches HL. Mathematics: Applications and Interpretations SL will satisfy the Advanced Functions prerequisite (only). Applicants who completed the pre-2021 IB curriculum may present Mathematics SL or HL to satisfy the Calculus and Advanced Functions prerequisites. Math Studies cannot be used to satisfy a prerequisite.

So, what do you need for a high IB score?

First of all, keep in mind that the IB is not a standardized test like the SAT or ACT. Instead, it’s a series of exams that are taken over two years (the first year being called “PYP” and the second being called “MYP”).

In order to get an IB score, you have to take at least six subjects during those two years. You’ll have to choose three subjects from one group (called “the core” or “component”), and three subjects from another group (called “Optional”).

The core group includes English A1 HL (Higher Level), Math Studies SL (Standard Level), and Science HL (Higher Level). The optional group includes History HL (Higher Level), Geography HL (Higher Level), or Economics HL (Higher Level).

Your total score is determined by adding up all the points you’ve earned across your chosen subjects. There are different criteria for each subject – for instance, in English A1 HL your essay will be graded on how well it demonstrates “critical thinking,” whereas in Math Studies SL your exam will focus more on problem solving.
