The University of Nantes was founded in 1970, shortly following extensive upheaval in the French education system that created many French universities that we know today, however an original University of Nantes had existed prior to this, first being founded in 1460.

The university currently exists spread out across six campuses, four of which are along the Loire river in the city of Nantes, northern France, with the remaining two campuses located in Saint-Nazaire and La-Roche-Sur-Yon.
