First-Year Admission
First-year students enroll in the Colleges of Liberal Arts & Sciences, Engineering, Business, Nursing, Public Health, or Education. Specific requirements for these and the other UI colleges that admit undergraduates follow:
College of Liberal Arts & Sciences
To be admitted, you must:

To be eligible for direct admission as a first-year student, you must:
- Meet the Regent Admission Index (RAI) score equivalent of 265 or higher;
- For students entering in Fall 2021, you may be admitted to this college without a test score.
- Present a cumulative high school GPA of 3.33 or higher;
- Meet the high school course requirements.
It is highly recommended that applicants for admission to the College of Engineering have:
- One year of high school physics;
- One year of high school chemistry;
- Grades of A or B in all math and science courses.
If you are a homeschooled applicant, we will base our admission decision on your GPA, ACT and/or SAT scores, and courses taken.
Students who are not admitted directly into the College of Engineering will be admitted to the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences with a designation of “Engineering (Interest)” and may apply to the College of Engineering after completing prerequisite coursework.

Tippie College of Business—Direct Admission Program
The Tippie College of Business admits highly qualified first-year students through its Direct Admission Program. To be eligible for admission, you must:
- Meet the high school course requirements.
- Present an ACT composite score of 26 or higher (SAT: EBRW+M 1230).
- For students entering in Fall 2021, you may be admitted to this college without a test score.
- Present a high school GPA of 3.60 or higher.
Applicants who meet high school course requirements and either the test score or GPA requirement will be carefully considered for
direct admission.
Students who are not admitted directly into the College of Business will be admitted to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences as pre-business majors and will be able to apply to the College of Business after completing prerequisite coursework.
College of Nursing—Direct Admission Program
Direct Admission to the College of Nursing is designed for high-achieving high school students. There are two direct admission options: early action or regular decision. You must meet the criteria below to be considered for either option.
- Meet the high school course requirements
- 4 years of High School English
- 1 year of High School Biology
- 1 year of High School Chemistry
- 1 year of High School Physics
- One year of each: Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry
- 3 years of High School Social Studies
- Minimum 2nd-level proficiency in one world language
- Present an ACT Composite score of 28 or higher (SAT: 1300 or higher)
For students entering in Fall 2021, standardized test scores will not be used as a part of the review process for Nursing but students will be required to meet all other direct admission requirements.
Present a cumulative high school GPA of 3.80 or higher (can be weighted or unweighted).
Qualified applicants, or applicants lacking one of the criteria above will be invited to submit a supplemental application for direct admission. Please note that each high school course is considered a separate requirement. Applicants are urged to meet all minimum requirements. All Direct Admission candidates are expected to complete high school course content requirements prior to enrollment at Iowa.
Early Action has an application deadline of Nov. 1, accepts up to 50 applicants, with admission decisions on or about Dec. 1. Students who apply via Early Action who are not initially offered admission may be considered for Regular Decision.
Regular Decision has an application deadline of Feb. 1, accepts 30 applicants, with admission decisions on or about March 1. Students not initially admitted for Direct Admission may be selected for Assured Admission or added to a Waitlist for Assured Admission. Students who aren’t direct admitted enroll in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, then apply for standard admission to the College of Nursing after (or while completing) prerequisites.

College of Public Health—Direct Admission Program
To be eligible for direct admission as a first-year student, you must:

- Present a cumulative high school GPA of 3.33 or higher (can be weighted or unweighted).
Direct admission is available for fall only.
Applicants who meet high school course requirements and either the test score or GPA requirement will be carefully considered for direct admission.
Students who are not admitted directly into the College of Public Health will be admitted to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences as public health interest majors and can apply to the College of Public Health after (or while) completing the prerequisite courses and earning the required GPA.
College of Education
The College of Education offers majors with the teacher education program for students interested in licensure to teach in elementary and secondary schools. The college also offers a non-licensure major, Education Studies and Human Relations, for students who have goals in education or a helping profession but do not wish to pursue classroom teaching.
First-year students enroll in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and indicate an interest in elementary education or a choose a major in the field they would like to teach for secondary education. After completing required courses, students apply to a teacher education program in the College of Education. Admission is competitive.

College of Pharmacy
The college offers a professional program leading to a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree. First-year students enroll in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences for two years of pre-pharmacy study and then apply to the PharmD program. Admission is highly competitive and very selective.
Pharmacy Assured Admission Program
Students who are admitted to the Assured Admission Program are guaranteed a seat in the University of Iowa PharmD program, pending successful completion of all prerequisite and PharmD application requirements. Typically, during the sophomore year, students in the Assured Admission program complete an application via PharmCAS and complete a face-to-face interview at the college. Once all requirements have been met, students will enter the College of Pharmacy, usually after two years of undergraduate study in Pre-Pharmacy in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. To be eligible for assured admission as a first-year student, you must:
- Present an ACT Composite score of 25 or higher (SAT: 1200 or higher)
- For students entering in Fall 2021, you may be admitted to this college without a test score
- Present a cumulative high school GPA of 3.8 or higher (can be weighted or unweighted)
