Professional Experience Available
  • U.S. Coast Guard Engine License
  • Intern Option

Mechanical Engineering is a versatile program. Though many other schools offer it, few can provide the same access and opportunities for hands-on, real-world training. At Maritime, you will complete two professional internships or work toward a U.S. Coast Guard third assistant engineer, or engine, license by sailing and working onboard the college’s Training Ship Empire State VI.

Mechanical EngineeringAcademic Program

Mechanical Engineering courses focus on applied mechanics, math, fluid mechanics, electrical engineering, and design techniques and concepts.

If you are interested in working onboard a commercial vessel, you may pursue a U.S. Coast Guard engine license. The engine license program focuses on powering and controlling a shipโ€™s engine and energy systems, and you will work extensively on the training ship during your four years here. You will also belong to the college regiment of cadets. Earning a Coast Guard license does not require military service.

If working onboard a vessel is not part of your plan, you may pursue a more traditional college experience through the professional internship option. In this track, you will complete two internships. Mechanical Engineering students have completed internships with:

  • Turner Construction

LIFE AFTER MARITIME

Depending on their choice of engine license or internship option, Mechanical Engineering graduates usually choose either to sail and work onboard vessels, or to pursue shore-side careers.

Program Educational Objectives

The objectives of this program are for graduates to:

  1. become engineers who have the ability to practice the design, service, or operation of mechanical systems, and
  2. have the ability to take professional leadership positions that require an extensive engineering background

Student Outcomes

Mechanical Engineering graduates of Maritime College will possess:

  1. an ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics
