The Manchester School of Architecture is an internationally recognized school that trains architects in the UK. The school also offers a M.Arch program, which has been recognized by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC). The program is taught by world-class faculty members who have years of experience working with students and leading architecture firms.

• Transcripts demonstrating academic achievements and courses taken at undergraduate level. Applicants who have already completed a degree will not be required to submit a transcript, but they must include a copy of their diploma or certificate with the application package.
• Test scores for SAT Reasoning Test (SAT), Graduate Record Examination (GRE), International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme Diploma Programme Examination (IBDP). A minimum score of 650 on each section of the SAT is required for consideration; however, it is highly recommended that your scores reach 700 or higher for maximum consideration for scholarships, program placements and awards. The average score for our most recent incoming class was 725 per section on the combined verbal reasoning and math sections. Applicants who apply by December 1st will be given preference in our rolling admissions process if they meet this requirement; otherwise they will be considered based upon availability in our programs and support from external funding sources such as CICA Scholarships.* References should come from an academic advisor or someone familiar with you as an individual who has been involved in your academic career since high school graduation

If you are able to provide a portfolio containing examples of past creative work relevant to architecture studies, we encourage you to do so!

Admission to the program is highly selective. The Manchester School of Architecture IB class of 2020 had an acceptance rate of 5%, with a total class size of 20 students. This year, 9 students were accepted from the waitlist—73% of those who applied to the program were accepted.

To be considered for admission, applicants must submit all required documents and complete a submission form that includes their portfolio and essay responses (details can be found on our How To Apply page). Applicants should note that their portfolios must demonstrate that they have met all program requirements and provide evidence of their potential to succeed in higher education as well as professional practice.

Applicants are considered on a case by case basis.

The Manchester School of Architecture is a highly selective school and will only accept students with a strong academic background. In addition, they look for applicants with an excellent portfolio.

For the final stage of the application process, each candidate must submit a personal statement and attend an interview. The interviews are conducted by representatives from MSA’s faculty board who conduct all interviews on site in Manchester.

To get into the Manchester School of Architecture, you’ll need to meet the minimum requirements for both their undergraduate and postgraduate courses first. For an undergraduate degree, you’ll have to meet the following:

• Be able to demonstrate spoken English skills

A mixture of science or maths and humanities or arts subjects is preferred, but not essential.

Art or Fine Art A-levels are particularly welcomed; however, please note that applicants with three arts-based subjects (for example, Art, Graphics and 3D Design, or Art, Photography and Design and Technology), or a BTEC Extended Diploma in Art and Design on its own will not be considered as meeting our entry requirements.

We do not require a pass in the Science Practical Assessment.

AS-level

AS level results are not considered as part of the standard admissions process at The University of Manchester.

The University of Manchester welcomes the provision of unit information where available.  Like all other information provided by applicants this may be taken into consideration when assessing your application.  Unit grades will not normally form part of an offer conditions.

GCSE

Applicants must demonstrate a broad general education including acceptable levels of Literacy and Numeracy, equivalent to at least Grade C or 4 in GCSE/iGCSE English Language and Mathematics. GCSE/iGCSE English Literature will not be accepted in lieu of GCSE/iGCSE English Language.

International Baccalaureate

We are aware of the planned changes to the IB Mathematics curriculum. IB students will be able to choose from Mathematics: analysis and approaches and Mathematics: applications and interpretation from September 2019.

Applicants studying the International Baccalaureate Career Related Programme (IBCP) should contact the academic School prior to applying so that their academic profile can be considered.

English language

All applicants to the University (from the UK and Overseas) are required to show evidence of English Language proficiency. The minimum English Language requirement for this course is either:

• GCSE/iGCSE English Language grade C/4 , or;
• IELTS 6.5 overall, with 6.5 in writing and no other sub-section below 6.0, or;
• An acceptable equivalent qualification.

We do not offer Pre-sessional English Language courses for entry onto our undergraduate programmes within the School of Environment, Education and Development.

The UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) requires that every student from outside the UK and the EU must show evidence of a minimum level of English Language in order to be granted a UK visa (Tier 4 visa) to study at undergraduate or postgraduate level. This level is often referred to as the ‘B2 level’. Additionally, our individual Schools may ask for specific English Language proficiency levels that are necessary for their academic programmes. In most cases these requirements are likely to be higher than the B2 level. Manchester School of Architecture

The Manchester School of Architecture (MSA) provide undergraduate and postgraduate architecture courses, jointly run by Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Manchester. Students will benefit from the considerable resources available at both universities, along with teaching and research expertise. The BA (Hons) Architecture and Master of Architecture (MArch) courses at the MSA are recognised as Part 1 and Part 2 qualifications by the Architects Registration Board (ARB) and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

The traditional first step in architecture was to study a degree in architecture. However, this is no longer the case. The majority of architects now enter through an alternative route, such as a Higher National Diploma (HND) or a Bachelor of Arts (BA). Architecture courses at undergraduate level are offered by a range of institutions across Britain and Ireland (see below for some examples), all with different focuses and specialisms. The most common routes into architecture are via an HND or BA followed by postgraduate study at either university or college level or both.

If you’re applying to the Glasgow School of Art and hoping to study Architecture, you’ll need:

• you must have a 2:1 or higher in your degree
• you need at least 5 GCSEs at grade A including English and Maths. They also require that you should be fluent with technology such as AutoCAD or Rhino3D; this could be something worth looking into if you don’t have any experience using these programmes.
• they require that you should have 5 A levels at grade A including English and Maths (if they are applied).

Degree entry requirements.

You will need a degree in architecture, art and design or a related subject. If you have studied a related subject with a focus on art and design, this may be accepted as an alternative qualification. You can find out more about the types of subjects we accept on our website.

UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admission Service) is the central organisation that processes applications for full-time undergraduate courses at UK universities.

In addition to the typical academic quality and depth of your post-16 qualifications, we will consider the range of subjects you take, along with your performance in each subject.

You should have a broad range of subjects in your post-16 qualifications. It is not enough to have a good grade in one subject; you need to do well in a range of subjects. You should also consider the number of GCSEs and/or AS levels you study for, as this will be taken into account when we look at your application. We expect all applicants to take a minimum of five A Levels or equivalent qualifications from the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, Advanced Subsidiary Level (AS) and Higher Level (HL). These must include Biology, Chemistry and Physics at HL level or above; Mathematics at HL level or above; English Language at GCSE grade C6 or above with no grade below C6 at AS/A2 level; plus another A Level from those listed above that does not overlap with the other course requirements – for example: Geography instead of Biology etcetera…

This includes all grades from GCSE or equivalent up to and including A levels or equivalent in your case.

All your previous qualifications are included in the UCAS tariff, which is a points system used by universities to compare applicants from different schools.

However, the grades you have achieved in GCSEs and equivalent qualifications won’t be included in this tariff. Instead, they’ll be used as an indicator of how well you’ve done at school. Universities will also take into account other factors such as your personal statement and references when making their decisions about whether or not they want to offer you a place on their degree course.

The minimum entry requirement is normally AAA at A level, including an A grade in an art and design related subject (e.g.

• A level is a type of qualification that you may have completed at school, college or university. This can usually be studied over two years and will give you a total of three or four grades. You will receive two or three separate grades for each subject rather than one overall grade, so if a student has done six subjects they would receive six separate results – one each for their six different subjects.
• A C grade is the lowest possible grade awarded at A level and means that the student has achieved between 40% – 49%.
• An A grade is the highest possible grade awarded at A level and means that the student has achieved between 60% – 69%.
• If your course includes a non art and design related subject then you will need to achieve an A grade in this as well as your Art & Design related subject(s)
