3 Reasons to Earn Your Bachelor’s Degree
People today are earning bachelor’s degrees at increasing rates. The U.S. Census Bureau notes that the between 2000 and 2018 the percentage of adults age 25 and older who had completed a bachelor’s degree or higher increased by 9 percentage points, from 25.6% to 35%.*
As organizations increasingly demand qualified candidates, job seekers have turned to higher education to outshine the competition. A bachelor’s degree can help you get your foot in the door and be strongly considered for your dream position; the skills you acquire in your program are what can help you secure the job offer.
1. Increase your earnings
Earning your bachelor’s degree can make financial sense. Comparing median weekly earnings, a bachelor’s degree could bump up your paycheck by almost 65% – an amount that makes your undergraduate program a smart investment beyond a high school diploma. Even when compared to an associate degree, median weekly earnings increase 40% for bachelor’s degree holders.**
When Janna Goraya ’17 earned her bachelor’s in accounting from SNHU, her paycheck jumped: “I am now in a job I love, have doubled my salary from where I was when I started this journey and have a sense of accomplishment I haven’t felt in a long time.” Her next goal? An even higher-paying chief financial officer position.
2. Reach your goals
Not only does higher education make sense in regards to your finances, but a bachelor’s degree can also lead to more career opportunities and personal fulfillment. For Stacy Fuller ’17, her bachelor’s in health information management from SNHU meant increased responsibility: “This degree helped me obtain this job, and my job duties have grown double since I started at the hospital full time.”
3. Decrease likelihood of unemployment
A bachelor’s degree doesn’t just improve your chances for a healthier salary. The unemployment rate also decreases for graduates – by over 45% when compared to those with a high school diploma.**
Justin Perry ’17 knows that earning a bachelor’s degree is an accomplishment he can always fall back on. “I work every day at becoming better at what I do and getting closer to my goals,” he said about his BA in Communication from SNHU. “Having a degree was always part of the plan, though; I realized that no matter what my circumstance is, I could always improve it through the use of education.”
If you’re unsure of which program would be the best fit for you, request information and talk to an advisor about it.

Why Earn Your Master’s?
Whether you’re a recent graduate or a seasoned professional, earning your master’s degree can provide a number of opportunities to advance your career, sharpen your skill set and help you stand out in a competitive job market.
In fact, in fields such as business, education, healthcare and STEM advanced degrees are no longer an option – they’re essential. Employers are placing greater emphasis on top talent who can enter a role and make an immediate impact. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics, jobs requiring a master’s degree are expected to increase by 15% through 2029.1 As a result, a growing number of working adults are going back to school to earn their master’s.
From building skills employers want to see to increasing your earning potential and moving up in your field, a master’s degree can have lasting benefits on you and your career.
Enhance your skills
With courses that dive deep into your area of study, hands-on experience designed to prepare you for the field and instructors with real-world expertise, SNHU’s master’s degree programs can help you develop a specialized set of skills employers are looking for. You’ll become the subject matter expert in the field of your choice, making you that much more competitive in your field.
Pursuing your master’s degree is also a great way for current working professionals to keep up in your industry, and ensure your skills are timely and relevant.
1. Boost earning potential
There’s a lot of value in getting your master’s degree – and we’re not just talking professionally. Having your master’s can increase your earning potential in a wide range of industries. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, master’s degree holders earned an average of almost 20% more in their weekly earnings than bachelor’s degree holders in 2020.1 That means, on average, master’s degree holders made $12,000 more in annual salary than bachelor’s degree holders.1
2. Prepare for your future
For many industries, a bachelor’s degree just doesn’t cut it anymore. The BLS predicts a 15% increase in jobs requiring a master’s degree through 2029, while jobs requiring a bachelor’s degree are only set to grow by 6.4%.1 As more and more employers look for job candidates with master’s degrees, continuing your education could help your resume stand out and create more opportunity in your career.
These figures signal big challenges for those who have yet to earn a graduate degree – and not just at the entry level. As SNHU graduate Lisa Kpotie ’16 can attest, even seasoned job seekers with years of experience need continued education to go further.
“I started to realize that in order to be more marketable in my field, I needed to go back to school,” she said. Now, thanks to the MS Accounting degree program at SNHU, she’s taken her career to the next level.
“Getting my master’s … allowed me to branch out and open my own [business].”
Not only does a master’s degree help open doors in your career – it can also help you reduce the likelihood of unemployment. In 2020, the BLS reported a 4.1% unemployment rate for those who earned their master’s.1 On the other hand, the BLS reported a 5.5% unemployment rate for bachelor’s degree holders and a rate of 8.3% for those without a degree.
3. Fulfill your dream
Earning potential, future planning and increased employment opportunities aren’t the only possible benefits of earning a master’s. For some, the sense of personal fulfillment is also key.
Jessica Cooper ’14 is one such case. As a veteran and military spouse, her decision to go back wasn’t only for herself – it was for the people she cared about.
“I was the first in my family to ever obtain a degree of any kind,” she said. “I never in a million years dreamed I would [earn an MBA], but I’m so glad I did it.”
A master’s degree from SNHU can help position you for the life and career you want – and help you work toward a brighter future. Request information today.

Gain an Edge with a Certificate
Getting a certificate from an accredited, respected college like Southern New Hampshire University is an achievement to be proud of.
Not only will it allow you opportunities you may not have had before, but it can help set you on a path of learning for years to come.
Most of SNHU’s online certificate programs fall into one of 2 categories:
- An undergraduate certificate, which can be the fastest option to earn documentation of progress on the road to a higher-level degree, or it can be an opportunity to learn a new skill that can support career advancement or change.
- A graduate certificate, which can be an opportunity to learn new skills that support your career or keep your existing skills up to date. This could also position you for advancement – either with your current employer or a future one.
Either way, earning a certificate allows you to update your resume with a credential that may give you a leg up on the competition.
Potential for a Salary Bump
For students who are just entering college for the first time, completing an online certificate program could make a difference in your paycheck.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, workers with some college (no degree) may earn about 12% more in median usual weekly earnings than those with only a high school diploma.1
And with each degree you earn – should you decide to pursue more education – that potential increase in pay can rise. Say, for example, you’d want to move the credits you earned into a degree program, like an associate degree.
Those with an associate degree made over 20% more in median usual weekly earnings than those with a high school diploma in 2020.1 Even when compared to those who finished some college (with no degree), associate degree holders still earned about 7% more.1
As for those who’ve earned their degree and want more training, there’s so much opportunity for a pay increase here, too. Adding more education to your resume can give you a leg up on the competition – potentially giving you the edge you need to stand out to employers.
Plus, employers love to see that you’ve taken the initiative to improve yourself and that you can use your skills to help the organization.
No matter where you are in your career, a certificate has the potential to help you move forward.
Certificates Prove to be Popular
Short-term learning options – like certificates – have become increasingly popular over the past few years. SNHU offers 30+ certificates between campus and online formats, and they’re available in a number of subjects like accounting, human resource management and various studies of criminal justice, among others.
Prep for Certifications
Those skills you learn in an SNHU certificate program may be able to offer you more than the skills you’ve been desiring.
They can also set you up for success if you’re trying to earn an industry-recognized credential. For example:
Graduate Project Management Certificate: If you plan to sit for the Project Management Professional (PMP)® exam, this program includes a course that satisfies the educational requirement for the credential.
Graduate Certificate in Six Sigma: This program positions you for the Six Sigma Black Belt certification exam, which could help you move into higher-level manufacturing, engineering, operations and executive positions.

Getting Started with an Associate Degree
Whether you’re looking to get ahead in your current job or break into a new field, earning an associate degree is a great step in taking your career to the next level. Designed to be completed in as little as 2 years – or even faster if you have transfer credits – the associate degree is an attractive option for learners looking to further their education.
Standing Out in a Competitive Job Market
With the job market becoming increasingly difficult to maneuver, earning an associate degree can open doors to new opportunities. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, jobs requiring at least an associate degree are expected to rise 11% from 2016-2026.*
After taking time off school and struggling to find her niche in healthcare, Emma Gilbert ’14 decided to branch out and enroll in an associate degree program at SNHU. “My supportive husband suggested I should take some courses in business administration to broaden my scope of practice,” she said. Shortly after beginning her schooling, Gilbert received a job offer.
Her story isn’t a coincidence, either. On average, people who have earned an associate degree are less likely to be unemployed than those who didn’t pursue a degree beyond high school.**
Climbing the Career Ladder
It isn’t just entry-level job seekers who are affected by the demand for candidates with college degrees. Increasingly, adults with workforce experience are enrolling in associate degree programs to help advance their careers.
“Recently, I have seen my company leaning more towards people with degrees when considering promotions,” said associate in business administration student Michael Hall. “I decided to step out of the shadows and go back to school for business administration.”
Beyond opening doors to more job opportunities, earning your associate degree is a good way to invest in yourself. On average, associate degree holders earn 17.4% more than those with only a high school degree.**
Stepping into Your Bachelor’s Degree
An associate program is also a great option if you’re on the fence about pursuing your bachelor’s degree. Some students choose to use their associate degree as a stepping-stone to earn general education credits that can later be put toward a bachelor’s program of choice.
When Michele Hale ’17 initially enrolled at SNHU, she had the goal of earning her associate in accounting. After successfully completing the program, she was inspired: “Now with the encouragement of my academic advisor, I am looking forward to enrolling for my BS.”
The good news is when you earn your associate degree at SNHU, choosing to continue your education isn’t a chore – you can seamlessly transfer your credits to one of our bachelor’s programs down the road.
