For any course taken pass/fail in spring 2020, fall 2020, or spring 2021 please be aware of the following:
- The Wharton IT/DD admissions committee will look at the original grade submitted by the course instructor before it was converted to a ‘P.’
- Original grades for courses taken pass/fall in spring 2020, fall 2020, or spring 2021 will not be used to recalculate your cumulative GPA for purposes of eligibility.
- Courses taken pass/fail during spring 2020, fall 2020, or spring 2021 only will not count toward the one-pass/fail-course-per-academic-year maximum.
- If you receive a ‘P’ in a required course taken in spring 2020, fall 2020, or spring 2021, you will be eligible to apply. However, the committee will consider the strength of your performance in required courses taken pass/fail.
Eligibility, Requirements, and Application
Penn undergraduates interested in transferring to Wharton should review the information below and in the FAQ and then attend one of our internal-transfer/dual-degree information sessions. Students should also meet with their home school advising office as soon as possible to discuss their plans.
Wharton academic advisors are not available to meet with prospective students, and any questions should be directed to undergradinfo@wharton.upenn.edu.
ELIGIBILITY
Below are general eligibility requirements for current Penn students seeking to internally transfer into the Wharton School:
- Penn students who are at the end of their first year (after two semesters) or in the middle of the sophomore year (after the third semester) at Penn are eligible to apply.
- Students who transferred to Penn from another college or university (external transfers) are not eligible to apply for internal transfer.
- Students who previously internally transferred to any of Penn’s undergraduate schools or divisions are not eligible to transfer again within the University.
- Students in Penn’s College of Liberal and Professional Studies are not eligible to apply for internal transfer.
Students must also meet specific academic and course requirements, which are listed below.
ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS
In addition to the eligibility requirements, there are specific academic requirements and course prerequisites that all students wishing to internally transfer into Wharton must meet:
- Students applying for internal transfer must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.30.*
- Applicants must complete at least four (4) course units (CU) per semester at Penn (fall and spring semesters only).
- Students can take required courses over the summer as long as those courses are completed prior to applying for entry into Wharton.
- Classes taken at Penn during summer terms do not count towards the four-CU requirement.
- Only one course can be taken pass/fail during an academic year. Required courses cannot be taken pass/fail.*
- Students must earn a “C” (2.0) or better in required courses to be eligible to apply. Students cannot retake required courses.*
- All open grading issues (Incompletes, NRs, or GRs) should be resolved within two weeks after the official end of the term.
- Course waivers, advanced placement credits, and transfer credits must appear on the student’s transcript before the application is submitted.

- Academic rigor while at Penn
- Quality of the answers to the application questions

We encourage you to review the features of each application format and use the platform that suits you best.
