The program is designed for full-time students who wish to pursue a career as a medical physicist either as a researcher, as a certified clinical professional, or in industry. Overview
Medical physicists are health care professionals with specialized training in the medical applications of physics. Their work often involves the use of x-rays and accelerated charged particles, radioactive substances, ultrasound, magnetic and electric fields, infra-red and ultraviolet light, heat and lasers in diagnosis and therapy. Most medical physicists work in hospital diagnostic imaging departments, cancer treatment facilities, or hospital-based research establishments. Others work in universities, government, and industry.
Master’s Degree Programme in Medical Physics
Master’s Degree Programme in Medical Physics is a multidisciplinary two-year master’s degree programme that combines high-level research and teaching. The programme is designed for all nationalities, and a maximum of 15 students will be accepted into it.
In the programme, curriculum theory meets practice:The programme includes the possibility for a clinical internship at the Kuopio University Hospital, consisting of e.g. quality assurance measurements, training in radiation dosage planning for cancer treatment and getting familiar with the routine tasks of a medical physicist. The clinical internship can be replaced with a research internship at one of the high-class research groups at the Department of Technical Physics at the University of Eastern Finland.
The master’s programme will equip the student with specialist skills in the field of medical physics. In addition, the course of study will provide the expertise required to pursue a specialization as a medical physicist and can open pathways to further advanced studies and fellowship opportunities.
Upon completion of the programme, the graduate will have a career path tailored to his or her needs or interests, creating a possibility of:
- Continuing advanced studies to pursue a career as a scientist
- Becoming a valuable part of industry (e.g., in health technology and engineering)
- Working in management and teaching
- Acting in science administration at national level or internationally
- Continuing in pursuit of a career as a specialized medical physicist
Graduates of the M.Sc. in Medical Physics program will:
- understand the physics of medical imaging and radiation oncology;
- be able to apply medical physics theory to frontier research;
- work effectively in clinical and research environments that include oncologists, radiologists, nuclear medicine physicians, cardiologists, neuroscientists, radiation therapy professionals and biomedical engineers;
- be highly competitive in the Canadian and international medical physics labour markets.

The program benefits from research strengths within the Vancouver area medical physics community, e.g. radiation therapy, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and nuclear medicine imaging (PET and SPECT) for brain, cardiac and cancer imaging, and high energy nuclear physics.
Research conducted within the program can directly contribute to provincial heath care initiatives through engagement of associate and adjunct faculty based in local health care institutions.
Both the MSc and PhD medical physicist are eligible to sit the Canadian College of Physicist in Medicine exam which awards the credential for clinical practice.

University higher education in Finland is funded by the State through the Ministry of Education, and therefore international students enrolled in regular degree studies pay no tuition fees.
You can study in Finland for free for international students.
Bachelor’s and Doctoral level programmes -as well as many Master’s level programmes- do not charge any tuition fees, regardless of your nationality. This also applies to the international degree students and to exchange and visiting students as well. However, some Master’s programmes may charge tuition fees from non-EU/EEA students.
The student union charges a membership fee per term. Membership is compulsory for those studying for their Bachelor’s or Master’s degrees; those pursuing their doctoral studies may join the student union if they wish.
One important aspect of study in Finland is considering how to finance your study or research period. You will need to be able to cover your everyday living expenses, travel, insurance, etc. Financing one’s stay and studies in Finland by working is not possible.

Tuition fees and scholarships
Non-EU/EEA students in Finland are subject to tuition fees in English-taught Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes. The universities also offer scholarship options for gifted non-EU/EEA students admitted into degree programmes with tuition fees.
