To help you identify which DO programs you should apply to, we compiled a list of the best osteopathic medical schools and their important admissions data.
As previously mentioned, students accepted to osteopathic med schools have lower stats than students who enter allopathic medical schools. To compare, in the 2018–2019 application cycle, the average GPA and MCAT for DO program matriculants were 3.47 and 502.5, while the averages of students enrolling in MD programs were 3.72 and 511.2.
(Note: 2018–2019 is the most recent application cycle for which GPA and MCAT statistics are available for DO matriculants. We’ll update this guide when new statistics are published.)
It might surprise you that osteopathic medical schools as a whole have a lower acceptance rate—36 percent vs. 41 percent for allopathic med schools. This is because there are only 37 accredited DO programs, compared to the 150+ MD programs available. With far fewer DO seats available, the competition is still fierce to get accepted, so you’ve got to make yourself a competitive applicant.
And just because the class profiles of DO programs are a little lower than MD programs, don’t think osteopathic medical schools are of lower quality. Of the 37 DO programs, 13 landed in the top 122 medical schools list ranked by U.S. News & World Report according to research reputation. So if you want to become a DO physician, you have many respected programs to choose from.
Below, you’ll find the rankings and stats for the best DO schools.

College Of Osteopathic Medicine Of The Pacific Tuition
It’s a well-known fact that attending medical school is expensive.
To illustrate this, consider the median costs of tuition, fees, and health insurance at allopathic medical schools during the 2020–2021 academic year:
$39,150 (in-state, public medical schools)
$63,546 (out-of-state, public medical schools)
$64,053 (in-state, private medical schools)
$64,494 (out-of-state, private medical schools)
On top of this, the median medical school debt for the MD class of 2020 was a hefty $200,000.
However, medical school tuition varies widely from program to program, and it’s important to know how much you’ll be expected to pay—even if you plan to apply for medical school scholarships—when deciding which schools to apply to.
To help shed more light on medical school costs, we’ve ranked every U.S. program—MD and DO—based on its cost of attendance for out-of-state students. We’ve also listed the corresponding costs for in-state students so you can have the full financial picture as you create your school list.

List of tuition at every medical school (MD)
The list below shows the total costs of tuition, fees, and health insurance at each MD program in the U.S. during the 2020–2021 academic year. Schools are ranked from high to low according to their cost to out-of-state students.
There are a handful of medical schools that do not accept out-of-state candidates; these schools appear at the end of this list.
Additionally, bear in mind that some schools, such as Weill Cornell and Columbia, now offer debt-free financial aid, meaning that eligible students won’t have to take out loans. Depending on your financial need, tuition and fees may be entirely covered. Nevertheless, the full cost of attendance for these schools is listed below.
(Note: The AAMC tuition and fees data that we pulled from is reportedly current as of December 2020, yet it may not exactly reflect what schools list on their site. Regardless, we monitor and update this list from time to time.)
