Admissions to Global Bachelor’s Programmes
Below you will find information on how to apply for the Global Bachelor’s Programme i Biomedicine.
Karolinska Institutet offers one undergraduate programme in English, the Bachelor’s Programme in Biomedicine. All other undergraduate programmes, including the the medical programme and the dentistry programme, are taught in Swedish and the information regarding admissions process is only available on the Swedish programme pages. The information below is aimed for applicants interested in the bachelor’s programme in biomedicine.
Central online application portal
You apply for the Global Bachelor’s Programme in Biomedicine through universityadmissions.se, the online application portal for higher education in Sweden.

Do not send any documents to University Admissions in Sweden (universityadmissions.se) before you have completed the online application. Please also note that no documents should be submitted directly to Karolinska Institutet.
Autumn 2022 intakes
There are two separate admissions rounds for bachelor’s studies starting autumn 2022. Please note that University Admissions in Sweden must have received your final upper secondary school qualifications by the deadline for the receipt of supporting documents.
First admission round (online application open 18 October 2021 to 17 January 2022):
- Open for all international applicants with completed upper secondary studies.
- Applicants who need to apply for a visa to study in Sweden must apply before 17 January.
- EU/EEA citizens with completed upper secondary school/high school are also advised to apply in this application round.
Second admission round (online application open 15 March 2022 to 19 April 2022):
- Open for national and EU/EEA citizens.
- EU/EEA applicants studying in their final year of secondary school/high school must apply in the 19 April application round.
- National applicants should also apply in this application period.
Entry requirements
Before you apply, you should check that you have the required qualifications and language skills. In order to be eligible for the programme you must meet the general entry requirement, the programme-specific requirements, and the English language requirement.
General entry requirements
The general entry requirement is a completed upper secondary school/high school education (post-16) which qualifies you for higher education in your country. For detailed information on how you can meet the general entry requirement, check the country specific requirements.
Studying in your final year
If you are an EU/EEA citizen in your final year of upper secondary school, you can apply, but you are advised to apply in the second admissions round with application deadline 19 April 2022. In this application round you have until the deadline 21 June or 5 July 2022 to submit your final upper secondary school credentials, please check the key dates for detailed instructions. If you are an IB student in your final year you must request an early result from the IB coordinator at your school.
Citizens from outside the EU/EEA will not be able to apply in the second admissions round since there will not be enough time to apply for and receive a residence permit. Citizens from outside the EU/EEA are advised to apply in the first admissions round with application deadline 17 January 2022. In this admissions round, the final upper secondary school credentials must have been received by University Admissions in Sweden by 1 February 2022.
Specific entry requirements
In addition to the general eligibility requirements you also need to meet the specific entry requirements. The specific entry requirements for the bachelors programme in biomedicine are courses equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary level courses Biology 2, Chemistry 2, Mathematics 4, or the equivalent courses.
Your upper secondary school courses will be assessed by University Admissions once you have submitted a complete application. In the assessment of foreign upper secondary school courses and grades, University Admissions uses among others the following country handbooks developed by the Swedish Council for Higher Education.
Karolinska Institutet is not involved in the eligibility assessments and we cannot guide you regarding the assessments.
English language requirements
All applicants have to meet the English language requirement which is profiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary school course English 6.
You may meet the English language requirement through your upper secondary school studies, previous university level studies, or English language proficiency tests. Please read the instructions on how to document your English language proficiency at universityadmissions.se.
Documentation requirements
It is important that you follow the instructions on supporting documentation when you prepare your application. If you do not submit the documentation according to the instructions at universityadmissions.se, your application cannot be considered for admission.
Most documents can be uploaded and you will find detailed instructions on how to upload when you are logged in at your account at universityadmissions.se. You must among others make sure that you scan the original documentation and scan in colour. Scanned copies and certified copies will not be accepted by University Admissions in Sweden.
Please note that some upper secondary school credentials have to be submitted directly from your school to University Admissions in Sweden, please check the country specific instructions. In the country specific instructions you will also find information on whether your documents have to be translated. If you are an IB student in your final year you must request an early result from the IB coordinator at your school.
If you already have university level studies, you must also follow the documentation requirements for master’s applicants. Please read the country specific requirements and check whether your university records have to be translated, and if your university records can be uploaded.
Karolinska Institutet Scholarship For International Students
Scholarships
There are many Swedish, European and international foundations that award scholarships and grants. The rules for different scholarships and grants can vary – some are intended to help meet living costs, others fund tuition fees (for non EU/EEA citizens) and still others can be used for various educational costs. For details on the various types of scholarships and grants available, be sure to read and carefully follow the instructions provided.
Remember that other sources exist and that investing some time, effort and creativity in researching and applying for scholarships and grants can have a significant impact on the actual financial cost to you of your education.
The Karolinska Institutet Global Master’s Scholarships
Karolinska Institutet offers a handful of tuition fee scholarships to excellent students who have been admitted to one of our Global Master’s Programmes starting each Autumn semester. The amount of scholarships varies from year to year, but there are maximum 10 scholarships per year, spread to all the Global Master’s Programmes. The competition is fierce with approximately 1500 international students applying for the scholarship annually.
Who can apply?
To be eligible for the KI Global Master’s Scholarship you must:
- have applied to one of Karolinska Institutet’s Global Master’s Programmes starting 2022
- be a tuition fee paying student (from outside the EU/EEA)
- have paid the application fee by 1 February 2022
- fulfil the entry and documentation requirements for the programme you have applied for
Only first year students are eligible to apply.

Selection process
The selection process is based on an overall assessment of the applicant’s CV and qualifications that are submitted via UniversityAdmissions and evaluated in connection with the application for a KI Global Master’s programme. Scholarship awaredees will be notified personally.
What does the KI Global Master’s scholarship cover?
The KI Global Master’s Scholarship only covers the tuition fee (or part of the tuition fee for programmes only partially given by Karolinska Institutet). Travel, living expenses and other costs must be met with other funding. Furthermore, please note the KI Global Master’s Scholarship only covers tuition fee for students enrolled at a Global Master’s Programme here at Karolinska Institutet and cannot be used for other studies.

KI-DIS Fellowship
The KI-DIS Fellowship is a co-funded, merit-based fellowship covering up to 200 000 SEK in tuition fees for two semesters (one year) to any of KI’s nine Global Master’s Programmes. This would apply to a one-year master’s program, or the first year of a two-year master’s programme. The fellowship is available annually to a DIS alumnus who studied in either Stockholm or Copenhagen.
Who can apply?
To be eligible for the KI – DIS Scholarship you must:
- have applied to one of Karolinska Institutet’s Global Master’s Programmes starting 2022*
- be a tuition fee paying student (from outside the EU/EEA)
- have studied with DIS in either Stockholm or Copenhagen
- have paid the application fee by 1 February 2022
- fulfil the entry and documentation requirements for the programme you have applied for
Only first year students are eligible to apply.
*Please note that Molecular Techniques in Life Science is given by KTH Royal Institute of Technology and therefore not eligible for this fellowship.

What does the KI – DIS Fellowship cover?
The KI – DIS Fellowship covers the tuition fee for two semesters. Travel, living expenses and other costs must be met with other funding. For students admitted to our 2-year programmes, the second year of studies must be met with other funding.
Please note that the KI – DIS Fellowship covers the tuition fee for students enrolled at a Global Master’s Programme at Karolinska Institutet and cannot be used for other studies.
The Swedish Institute’s scholarships
The Swedish Institute (SI), a government agency, has a number of scholarship schemes open for students from countries outside the EU/EEA area. Depending on your nationality and field of study, the scholarships may apply to you. The SI scholarships cover both tuition fee and living expenses to the amount of 10,000 SEK per month for studies at master’s level. A travel grant is also issued to the recipient. The scholarship application period is from February 10 to 28 2022. Please note that you must have submitted an application for a master’s programme in Sweden at universityadmissions.se before applying for the SI-scholarship.
