Australian College Of Applied Psychology Reviews

Australian College Of Applied Psychology reviews show the college to be a rewarding option for people who wish to pursue a psychology career. Australian College Of Applied Psychology does not have any pretense about helping students find jobs in their field of study, but will provide students with the necessary tools and techniques to succeed in the wider world, which is sometimes more important than a specific job.

Company overview

Established over 30 years ago, the Australian College of Applied Psychology (ACAP) is a leader in applied psychology education. ACAP offers specialist courses in counselling, psychology, coaching, social science, social work, youth work and case management and has over 5,500 students studying on-campus or online. We are a registered higher education provider (HEP) and a nationally registered training organisation (RTO). Our Psychology degrees are accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) and our higher education counselling degrees are accredited by the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA). ACAP needs to start creating a culture that aligns with the core values that it uses in it’s marketing campaigns and start prioritising the wellbeing of students and staff. People over profit.

The good things

The students are a joy to teach. They are eager and enthusiastic. There are some wonderful staff working at ACAP. The educators, library staff and administrators have shown enthusiasm and commitment to trying to provide the best service possible to students. This does not include authoritarian senior management.

The challenges

Workloads are absolutely unbelievable. They are larger than any I have seen at other universities. Staff are not consulted on what they would like to teach and expected to take on far too many classes. Some staff had 7-8 different classes to teach across many different subjects. The expectation that an educator can be on top of so many different subjects is unrealistic, not to mention how much marking is expected to be completed in a two week turn around. Staff are being set up to fail with the workloads they are given as they don’t have the time or capacity to do a thorough job. It’s a real shame as all of the teachers are very passionate and care a lot about the work they are doing. It’s ironic to teach students the importance of professional boundaries and the signs of burnout under such conditions.

Great place to work, management can always improve.

The good things

I love working here. Many of the older, jaded academics don’t know how good they have it here. The students at ACAP are great, the support services it provides to students are some of the best around. I really believe students can get a better education here than at a large university, at least in the Psychological Sciences department. My colleagues are amazing.

The challenges

There are some management problems, in particular workload issues, academic advancement etc. I do, however, feel hopeful that they are trying to improve these issues. They need to remember to put their own people first, not just students.
