SSP STRUCTURE

The interdisciplinary curriculum of the SSP, with its emphasis on international cooperation, exposes participants to broad new perspectives on the worldโ€™s space activities โ€“ perspectives otherwise reserved for those with many years of diverse professional experience. The program is packed with a wide variety of activities, including lectures by renowned experts, hands-on activities and projects, team work and professional visits.

The main elements of the SSP curriculum are the core lecture series, workshops, departments and team projects. All course work at ISU is conducted in English. Each year the program evolves to better meet the needs of the participants and their employers. Participants are strongly encouraged to contribute their own knowledge, experience, ideas, culture and opinions as well as their energy and enthusiasm.

Reflecting on ISUโ€™s pedagogical approach and vision, interest in and respect for different cultures and backgrounds is expected from participants.

SSP PHASE 1

CORE LECTURE SERIESRead: >>> Easiest Universities to Get Into in USA

Phase I of the SSP curriculum ensures participants have a basic grounding in the fundamentals of all the disciplines that are relevant to space programs โ€” and that they understand the relaยญtionships between these disciplines in any space-related activity. All particยญipants attend the core lecture series, which creates a basic framework of knowledge to prepare participants for informed and balanced judgment.

A series of lectures in each field of study that is designed primarily for non-experts is presented. Thus, medยญical specialists can understand the lecยญtures on propulsion and engineers and lawyers can understand the lectures on the effects of weightlessness on the human body.Click Here to Get Amazon Books and Audiobooks

Core lectures are often grouped in clusters. Questions from participants and group discussions with the lecturยญers are encouraged.

Knowledge gained from the core lecยญtures allows participants to:

โ˜ž understand the very large range of factors, both technical and non-techยญnical, involved in space activity

โ˜ž apply good decision-making and management skills to projects

โ˜ž appreciate the relevance of all disยญciplines during the development and exploitation of space activitiesRead: >>> Easiest Universities to Get Into in USA

SSP PHASE 2

DEPARTMENT ACTIVITIESClick Here to Get Amazon Books and Audiobooks

Department activities encourage exยญchange of knowledge, ideas and opinยญions through debate and discussion, as well as hands-on activities. Deยญpartments have more time to go into greater depth with activities such as:

โ˜ž A seminar and discussion that go into greater depth following a core lecture

โ˜ž Visiting a space-related facility in the area

โ˜ž Building and operating very low frequency radio receivers

โ˜ž Remote sensing projects using local imagery and involving ground truthing

โ˜ž Examining barriers to technology transferClick Here to Get Amazon Books and AudiobooksRead: >>> Easiest Universities to Get Into in USA

โ˜ž Presentations by participants on their own work or interests

โ˜ž Building and launching a small rocket and payload

โ˜ž Hands-on experience with data systems or experimental hardware

โ˜ž Debates on space explorationโ€™s impact on society

Department activities provide an imยญportant opportunity for participants to interact with faculty members and lecturers and build their professional network. They also provide a means for participants to become sensitive to the cultural differences that govern personal interactions in a group setยญting and to adapt and develop presenยญtation and negotiation skills in light of this cultural diversity.

SSP PHASE 3

TEAM PROJECTSClick Here to Get Amazon Books and Audiobooks

In Phase III of the SSP, participants work in international, interdisciplinary and intercultural teams to produce a comprehensive analysis and proposals for an international space project or on a topic of relevance to the professional space sector. Participants choose one from multiple team project topics and work on that topic for the duration of the SSP. This element of the program has three main objectives:Read: >>> Easiest Universities to Get Into in USA

โ˜ž To encourage participants to put into practice what they have brought from their own educational and/or professional background, plus knowlยญedge and skills they learn from lecยญtures, workshops and other presentaยญtions during the SSP.

โ˜ž To experience decision-making and organizing work in sub teams. Also, to learn how to converge on solutions and recommendations while working in multidisciplinary and interculturยญal teams- where conflicting requireยญments emerge and compromises must be made.

โ˜ž To produce a comprehensive report of professional level and present it in a public session at the end product of the team project. The report covers all aspects โ€“ technical, financial, organizaยญtional, political, schedule and risk

Many ISU reports have served as reยญsources for the world space commuยญnity (see www.isunet.edu for Team Project reports). The structure of team projects depends to some extent on their subject matter, but certain asยญpects are common to all team projects:

โ˜ž An early phase of exploratory or brainstorming discussion of the projectClick Here to Get Amazon Books and Audiobooks

โ˜ž A series of factual lectures specific to the team project topics Research and an intensive fact finding period

โ˜ž A challenging period of wrestling with different ways of organizing the study effortRead: >>> Easiest Universities to Get Into in USA

โ˜ž Extensive opportunities to engage departmental faculty members and lecturers in discussion of team project issues

โ˜ž An interim presentation and review where expert advice and comments will be given

โ˜ž A period of very intense work to complete the final report.

Training facilities

With the strong support from ESA, the following facilities were installed and put into operation:

Astronomy Observatory

Several optical and radio telescopes at ISU give students the opportunity of performing observations as well as the necessary analysis, which introduces them to typical techniques of astrophysical research and gives them a first-hand experience in the study of the invisible Universe.

ESA-Dresden Radio Telescope

The satellite television Ku band (10โ€“12 GHz) is suitable to perform observations of the Sun and the Moon, using conventional material, such as a 1.2-meter parabolic dish, placed on the roof of the ISU building. This telescope, developed under ESA contract by the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits in Dresden for use in schools, has been given to ISU by ESA. It is capable of providing properly calibrated data and hence allows to determine the surface temperatures of the Sun and the Moon. Since its in-depth testing by ISU Masters students, it has been extensively used in the framework of workshops and individual student projects. With the ESA-Dresden Radio Telescope, the students can experience and perform all the necessary steps from observation, calibration, and data reduction to the interpretation and evaluation of the results.

Concurrent Design Facility (CDF)

When the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) acquired a new Concurrent Design Facility, its initial CDF was set up at the ISU Central Campus in 2008. The CDF brings the Mastersโ€™s students the possibility of familiarizing themselves with concurrent engineering and its application processes through workshops and assignments. These hands-on activities always have double-oriented tasks, by combining the CDF process with the development of space-related topics. As the usefulness of concurrent engineering extends much further than space mission design, the use of the ISU CDF for design processes in other industry fields than space is also under consideration.

GENSO Tracking Ground Station

A fully automated satellite tracking station is installed at ISU since 2008. This ground station provides several hands-on training opportunities for the Mastersโ€™ students, as satellite communication is now a reality at ISU. The ISU Tracking Ground Station was built in the scope of the Global Educational Network for Satellite Operations (GENSO) project, an endeavor involving students worldwide and promoted by the International Space Education Board (ISEB), an organization including the educational departments of some of the major space agencies worldwide.Click Here to Get Amazon Books and Audiobooks

Human Performance in Space Laboratory

Established in 2009, the ISU Human Spaceflight Laboratory includes a rotating chair, the training model of the ultrasound echocardiograph, and body motion analysis equipment that flew on Mir in 1988, and the flight model of the neuroscience Pocket equipment that flew on the Space Shuttle STS-51G mission. This equipment was all donated by CNES. In addition, NASA has loaned a training model of the ISS Advanced Life Support Pack (ALSP) and ESA has loaned a training model of the ISS 3DSPACE experiment. The Human Spaceflight Laboratory is also equipped with a clinostat, an autoclave, a laminar flow cabinet, microscopes, medical diagnosis and surgery tools, and other laboratory equipment to provide realistic hands-on training on the experiments performed in space by astronauts.

Self Deployable Habitat for Extreme Environments (SHEE)

The goal of the Self Deployable Habitat for Extreme Environments (SHEE) is to develop a deployable space analog habitat demonstrating technologies and architecture that may one day be used in extreme environment habitats on the Earth, Moon, and Mars. This project is a partnership between seven different companies and institutions representing five different European nations. This habitat is designed to support two โ€œastronautsโ€ for missions of up to two weeks in duration. Construction was completed in July 2015, after which the SHEE was shipped to ISU for validation and testing. ISU faculty and students will spend the next six months evaluating the habitat and delivering a report on their findings to the European Commission. The SHEE will live in the ISU High Bay until April 2016 when it will take part in a Mars Analog mission called Moonwalk in Rio Tinto, Spain.Read: >>> Easiest Universities to Get Into in USA
