Studying Music Business and Production will give you the knowledge, skills and confidence to launch your career in the music industry.

Overview

Learn about the music business, developing your creative flair while studying key areas such as marketing, management, copyright legislation, industry practices, finance and entrepreneurship. You also develop creative production skills using the latest technology.

Our degree programmes

Our three innovative undergraduate music programmes specifically meet the needs of those pursuing careers in the music industry. They combine rigorous academic study, technical instruction, creative outputs and professional opportunities.

Study abroad

We have partnerships with universities around the world, offering you the chance to study abroad for a term or for a year. Rising to the challenge of living in another country and immersing yourself in a different culture is a rewarding experience and demonstrates to potential employers that you are independent and flexible in your outlook.

Year in industry

It is also possible to undertake a yearโ€™s placement in industry either at home or abroad, gaining experience working in a professional environment. We offer support and advice to help you find a placement either in the music industry or other sectors such as charities and arts organisations.

Study resources

We are based on an inspirational waterfront environment in the Historic Dockyard Chatham, part of our Medway campus. We have excellent, industry-standard facilities and our studios are installed with state-of-the-art technology from leading manufacturers.

Our flagship studio integrates a new Neve Genesys Black G48 mixing console with our existing Genelec 5.1 surround system, and has a large live room and vocal booth.

We also have a number of other studios including an Avid HD studio with SSL Matrix mixing console, a Genelec multi-speaker studio, Foley recording studio and other well-equipped post-production suites and iMac workstation rooms.

In addition, our Music and Audio Arts Sound Theatre is one of the best in the UK.

Students can perform music in a variety of specialist spaces at the Medway campus and can also use the fantastic performance spaces at our Canterbury campus.

If you are an international student, visit our International Student website for further information about entry requirements for your country, including details of the International Foundation Programmes. Please note that international fee-paying students who require a Student visa cannot undertake a part-time programme due to visa restrictions.

Please note that meeting the typical offer/minimum requirement does not guarantee that you will receive an offer.

  • A levelBBC including Music or Music Technology at B.
  •  GCSEGrade C or 4 in Maths
  •  Access to HE DiplomaThe University will not necessarily make conditional offers to all Access candidates but will continue to assess them on an individual basis. If we make you an offer, you will need to obtain/pass the overall Access to Higher Education Diploma and may also be required to obtain a proportion of the total level 3 credits and/or credits in particular subjects at merit grade or above.
  •  BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma (formerly BTEC National Diploma)DMM (in a music subject, or alongside an A-level in Music or Music Technology at B). Alternatively, any BTEC can be considered alongside an A-level in Music or Music Technology at B.
  •  International Baccalaureate34 points overall or 14 points at Higher Level, including Music HL 5 or SL 6 and Mathematics 4 at HL or SL
  • International Foundation ProgrammePass all components of the University of Kent International Foundation Programme with a 60% overall average. Applicants need to have a background in music which can be technical or artistic (voice or instrument). Applicants will need to submit a portfolio โ€“ a music video or programme โ€“ to the Music Admissions Officer.

Our joint honours in Music Production and Music Business is perfect if youโ€™re the type of producer who wants to run the studio yourself. Itโ€™s also ideal if youโ€™re an aspiring entrepreneur wishing to understand the creative and technical aspects of music production.

Youโ€™ll learn the fundamental skills to produce music in a recording studio and use a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW). Alongside these practical skills, youโ€™ll also develop your understanding of the commercial elements of running a business.

Weโ€™ll teach you all you need to know via a combination of predominantly practical classes, workshops and seminars, all led by experienced industry practitioners. Each of our lecturers is active within todayโ€™s music industry. This means theyโ€™ll have the up-to-the-minute knowledge and insider insights that you wonโ€™t find anywhere else.

And, because we realise that everyone is different, we offer one-to-one tutorials to support you in tailoring your own education. Our tutorials will help to ensure that your learning is set to meet your motives, interests, learning pace and needs.

Within the subject-specific Music Production and Music Business Core modules, youโ€™ll focus on practical studio engineering and software skills, refined industry knowledge, application of acoustic theory and approaches to answering professional briefs, among others. Youโ€™ll also learn the necessary tools and expertise to be able to work within broader areas of the music industry.

As the course progresses, youโ€™ll have the chance to craft your course through a range of optional modules in Year 2 and 3. These options mean that youโ€™ll have the refined knowledge and expertise to start a career in a variety of industries. These include the recording industry, the live music industry, the film and TV industry, the audio post-production industry and the education industry.
