The University of Melbourne is one of Australia’s leading universities. Established in 1853, it is home to more than 50,000 students and offers a selection of undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate programs that can be completed online or on campus.
Tuition Fees (AUD)
Tuition fees are charged per semester, which is usually 11-12 weeks long.
The annual tuition fee is a flat rate applied to the whole course and covers the cost of your tuition, textbooks and other learning resources. For example, if your course is three years (36 units), then the annual tuition fee would be $AUS21,080.
Living costs
Living costs in Melbourne are high and can vary depending on what kind of accommodation you choose. It is estimated that students will pay between $500 – $800 per week in rent, but this price may vary depending on your location. If you are willing to live further out, it is possible to find cheaper accommodation.
If you have a car, then petrol costs can be quite expensive. A monthly bus pass costs around $100 and the unlimited travel plan for train and tram services usually costs about $100-$150 each month. Phone plans can also be expensive as most providers charge a minimum fee with additional fees for calls or data usage when travelling overseas. You might need to purchase student insurance as well, which could cost anywhere between $50 -$200 per year depending on how long you study here in Australia
Scholarships
The Faculty of Law welcomes international students who are interested in studying with us. We offer a range of scholarships to assist you with the cost of your studies, depending on your circumstances and level of study.
These scholarships are open to all international students who apply for admission to Melbourne Law School and can be applied for at any time during the application process. However, if you wish to apply for one of our Scholarships then we recommend that you begin your application as soon as possible so that we may assess all applications by the closing date or deadline advertised per scholarship. Applicants will be notified about their award by mid-March each year for commencement in Semester 1 (February) or Semester 2 (August).
Eligibility
To be eligible for Melbourne Law School, you must:
- have a bachelor’s degree in law or a relevant discipline;
- have a minimum GPA of 5.0 out of 7.0;
- be proficient in English by providing evidence of an IELTS overall score at 6.5 or above (with no less than 6.0 in any band) or TOEFL iBT 90 (with no less than 20 in speaking);
- complete all course requirements of the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) before applying; and/or complete the Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) before applying.
Duration
The duration of the program is 2 years.
Entry Requirements
Entry to the LLB program is highly competitive. You must have an undergraduate degree from a recognised university, which you have completed within the last five years.
In addition, you will be required to submit relevant documentation showing that your degree meets the following requirements:
- Your undergraduate degree should be from a recognised Australian university
- Your honours year in law should have been completed within 5 years of first admission to practice law in Victoria
Study Options
- Full-time study: This is the most common option for international students, who are required to enrol in at least 24 units per semester.
- Part-time study: Not recommended for international students, who may be required to pay increased tuition fees if they do not meet visa requirements.
- Study abroad: If you want to spend some time overseas and gain valuable experience as well as transferable credits, this might be an option for you.
Applicants must have an equivalent qualification of a four year Australian Degree with a minimum GPA of 5.0 out of 7.0.
To be eligible for admission to Melbourne Law School, you must have an equivalent qualification of a four year Australian Degree with a minimum GPA of 5.0 out of 7.0 and an IELTS score of 6.5 or higher. Additionally, you need to have an average of 70% in your undergraduate degree.
Domestic Students Tuition Fees
Citizens of Australia and New Zealand are both considered domestic students as are those with permanent Australian Residency Visas or Humanitarian Visas. All other students are considered international students regardless of which country they are resident in when they apply for their LLM program. At most Australian law schools domestic students tend to pay a lower tuition fee than international students for LLM courses, and the tuition fees can range from between $18,280 to $44,500.

Part-Time & Online LLM Tuition Fees
Part-time students can usually study an LLM program over five years. Students pay by the module, which is counted as six units, and at Monash University the tuition fee cost $3,962.50 per six units for domestic students and $5,175 per six units for international students. At the University of New South Wales (UNSW Law), it costs $4,170 per six units for domestic students and $5,190 per six units for international students. It takes eight modules or 48 units to gain an LLM at both institutions. Online course fees do tend to be a little lower for example the online LLM in International Law at Griffith University is $23,500 for all students.
Miscellaneous Fees
Australian law schools often have application fees of around $125 per year of study. Student amenity fees and student association fees are also required to be paid each year, and students should expect these to come to around $300 per year. If you are an international student, then your visa application will cost you $560 each time you apply.
