Mansfield University of Pennsylvania is a small, public, liberal arts university located in Mansfield, Pennsylvania, an area with a population of approximately 4,000. Mansfield University of Pennsylvania is one of fourteen state universities within the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. Established in 1857 as the Mansfield Classical Seminary, the original school burned to the ground three months after opening. In 1859 the seminary was rebuilt and reopened to 30 students with the Reverend James Landreth serving as Principle. Nearly 100 years later, the school was granted the expansion of a liberal arts program and became known as the Mansfield State College; in 1983 the college achieved university status and became part of the new Pennsylvania System of Higher Education. On January 23, 2015 Mansfield University of Pennsylvania was approved as the 29th member of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges.

Mansfield University of Pennsylvania is accredited by the Middle states Commission on Higher Education and has been so since 1942. STUDENT LIFE
Mansfield University of Pennsylvania has a total enrollment figure of nearly 3,000, including more than 2,500 undergraduate students. Residential students are housed in one of the University’s four residence halls. The University is situated on a 175 acre campus; the most notable and well-known historic building on campus is the North Hall Library, a seven-story Victorian structure built in 1878. Nearly destroyed in the ‘70s, due to pressure from community leaders and the campus, the building was salvaged and completely restored. In 1996 North Hall was reopened and continues to serve as a library with state-of-the-art technology.

MANSFIELD, Pa. (04/30/2020) — The Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) Board of Governors voted on Wednesday to freeze basic in-state tuition and the technology fee marking the second consecutive year that Mansfield University will not increase in-state tuition for students.

“Per U.S. News and World Report’s current rankings, Mansfield University ranks 1st in Pennsylvania for social mobility and 14th in the nation,” said President Charles E. Patterson, PhD. “This ranking itself speaks to importance of the Mansfield serving as an affordable, state owned institution of higher education and career readiness in Pennsylvania and beyond.”

Basic in-state tuition for undergraduate students will remain at $7,716 for the 2020-21 academic year. Also remaining the same will be the system’s technology fee for students, which stands at $478 for the academic year. The State System Board voted to freeze tuition and the technology fee unanimously.

Mansfield University lowered its in-state and out-of-state tuition rates along with costs for its modern, suite-style residence halls prior to the start of the 2019-20 academic year. With one of the lowest tuition rates for a four-year institution in the state of Pennsylvania, Mansfield University continues to be a leader in affordable and accessible higher education.

“Pennsylvania will recover from this pandemic, and our outstanding universities will have a role in leading the recovery,” PASSHE Chancellor Dan Greenstein said. “To be a leader will take courage, and the Board showed that kind of courage today by choosing to be on the side of students and affordability. We will be here to educate the business, healthcare, education, and community leaders of tomorrow by maintaining our place as the affordable higher education option for students of the Commonwealth.”

Mansfield is one of the largest colleges for Theology and Religion, admitting around five students per year (plus two more students from Philosophy and Theology!). It also has a fabulous location, about halfway between the Faculty of Theology and Religion and the Examination Schools and only a five-minute walk to the Bodleian Library. Mansfield also has two teaching fellows – one in Nineteenth-Century Thought and one in New Testament – and four lecturers in subjects that include Hebrew Bible/Old Testament, Ecclesiastical History and Feminist Theology, Modern Doctrine, and Hindu Studies.

With up to seven students a year in Theology and Religion and Philosophy and Theology at Mansfield, you join a strong community within the college that also includes a number of graduate students. Together we form a lively and welcoming community. Mansfield has one of the best college collections in Theology and Religion, with a separate room of the library dedicated to the subject.

Candidates may apply who have any combination of A levels or equivalent qualifications; it is not necessary to have taken Theology or Religious Studies. An interest in linguistic study is desirable, since precision in the use of words is of paramount importance in our field of study, and the first-year course includes study of a scriptural language of the student’s choice (ranging from Biblical Greek to Sanskrit), though prior knowledge of the language is not expected. Alongside academic excellence, we hope candidates with have appreciate historical, literal, and theological questions and an appetite for learning how to read, understand, and engage with complex and inspiring texts of all kinds. A religious affiliation is not necessary to read Theology and Religion at Mansfield, although some students do bring a personal interest in asking constructive and critical questions about their own religious traditions.
