Easy Steps to Getting Started at ACC
Step 1: Apply to ACC
Apply Online or download a Paper Application
Complete an online application, or print an application and return it to the ACC Admissions Office in Van Lare Hall 113 on ACC’s main campus or the Oscoda Campus Office. Paper applications can also be obtained in person from the Admissions Office in or via telephone request by calling 989.358.7339.

Step 2: Request Transcripts
If currently attending high school: give a completed application to your principal or counselor. He/she will forward it, along with your high school records, to Alpena Community College.
If not currently attending high school: send a completed application directly to Alpena Community College, or apply online and ACC will request high school records if applicable.
If you have attended another college: request each college to forward a copy of your transcript to the Registrar’s Office, Alpena Community College, 665 Johnson Street, Alpena, MI 49707.
Step 3: Apply for Financial Aid & Scholarships
Submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online as soon as possible prior to the semester you plan to begin attending ACC. This should provide sufficient processing time for the financial aid awarding. Go to the FAFSA website www.fafsa.gov to apply. Authorize the electronic release of the results (called the Student Aid Report or SAR) to ACC by including our code number, 002237, in the appropriate space on the FAFSA.
The Alpena Community College Foundation offers a large number of scholarships to our students. If you are applying for an academic scholarship or other types of general scholarships, you must file a FAFSA and an ACC Scholarships Application Form.
Step 4: Take the ACCUPLACER Placement Assessment or ACT
ACCUPLACER is a computerized test that helps the college evaluate your reading, writing, and math skills and place you into appropriate courses. ACCUPLACER scores are a prerequisite for many ACC courses.
The ACCUPLACER Placement Assessment is required for:
- All new Alpena Community College students who do not have A.C.T. Reading, English and Mathematics sub-scores of 18 or higher and wish to register for more than one course* (Note: placement tests will only be given in the subject areas where sub-score minimums were not met.)
- All new Alpena Community College students who do not have SAT Reading test scores of 25, Writing and Language test scores of 25 and Mathematics test score of 26.5 or higher and wish to register for more than one course* (Note: placement tests will only be given in the subject areas where sub-score minimums were not met.)
- Have not earned a minimum of 12 college credits including at least one college level course in either English or Mathematics.
- All students who enroll for the first time in an English or Mathematics course.
*Students who accumulate 6 credit hours by taking one course per semester will be required to take the ACCUPLACER placement test battery.
The ACCUPLACER Placement Assessment is strongly recommended for all students, regardless of course load or field of study. New students must submit an Application for Admission to the Admissions Office before attending assessment. Please bring a valid photo ID with you to the testing room. Examinees should allow approximately 2 hours.
American College Test (ACT)
Beginning full-time freshmen are encouraged to take the American College Test (ACT) prior to registration for classes. Have the report sent to Alpena Community College by listing our ACT code number 1960, in the appropriate space on the test.
Step 5: Orientation
New students are required to attend one of our mandatory orientation sessions. You can sign up for orientation online or by calling the Admissions Office. Orientation will give students a chance to tour ACC, figure out their financial aid, and meet with their academic advisor. An advisor will be assigned to you after you submit your Application for Admission. Meet with your advisor to plan what courses you need to take to achieve your academic goals. Advisors have office hours during registration week to help you pick classes and register. You can also call 989.356.9021 and ask to schedule an appointment with your advisor.
Step 6: Register & Pay for Classes
Register
Once you meet with an academic advisor, you need to register for classes. Registration for classes takes place before the start of each semester; dates and times are published in the semester schedule and advertised.
Choose the most convenient time to register at either the Alpena or Oscoda campus. Bring the registration form that you and your advisor filled out. Turn it in and be ready to pay the tuition and fees for your course(s).
Payment
Payment is by check, money order, Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express, or financial aid at the time of registration. On-line credit card payments are now accepted through WebAdvisor.
Cash is accepted at the Alpena Campus; however, no cash payments are accepted at the Oscoda Campus. Your cooperation is appreciated.
**PLEASE NOTE: The enrollment and refund period varies for courses that end before the regular 15 week sessions. Please contact the Registrar’s Office, 117 VLH for enrollment and refund deadline of such courses.
Step 7: Purchase Books
Visit the ACC Bookstore, located in the Besser Technical Center to buy books for your classes along with any ACC apparel or gifts. You can also purchase your books from ACC’s Online Bookstore.
Step 8: Attend Class & Get Involved!
Be sure to check WebAdvisor to verify your schedule, class locations, and times. Check out all of the resources available to ACC students, including free tutoring, counseling, clubs and organizations, intramural athletics, and more!
Alpena Community College Scholarships
ACC Scholarships
The ACC Foundation offers numerous scholarships funded by individuals, service clubs, corporations, and foundations to provide financial assistance to ACC students who meet the criteria established by the scholarship donors.

Recipients may:
- Be new or returning students depending upon the scholarship offered
- Reside in or out of district depending upon the scholarship offered
- Be full-time or part-time depending upon the scholarship offered
A student who wishes to be considered for a specific scholarship must meet the qualifications and fill out the scholarship application form. An applicant must have a high school diploma or GED or demonstrate the ability to benefit from a particular program of study. Some scholarships require letters of recommendation and/or essays, and may be renewable for a second year provided all requirements are met.
Scholarship offers are applied to the student’s account in equal amounts over the fall and spring semesters. If the scholarship recipient does not attend ACC for the fall semester, the scholarship offer will be forfeited.
PLEASE NOTE: Scholarship Applications are due in March each year. Offers are applied to the following fall semester. ACC only notifies students that are offered Scholarships, therefore, if you did not receive a Scholarship, you will not be notified.
Students will need to save the fillable PDF to their computer before entering their personal information. If you try to fill the document out directly in your web browser, your information will not be stored when you go to save the file.
In order to qualify for a scholarship, you must first apply for admission to the College and your Student Aid Report (S.A.R.) must be on file in the Registrar’s Office. Scholarship Applications are due in March each year. Offers are applied to the following fall semester.

Alpena Community College Admissions Policy
Alpena Community College grants admission to all persons who have earned a High School Diploma, Certificate of Completion or GED, or who are 18 years of age or older, and who demonstrate the ability to benefit from a particular program of study. Ability to benefit may be demonstrated by those who:
- Have satisfactory skills* as measured by institutional placement testing for reading, language and numerical skills OR
- Can produce Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test score results of 500 or better when coming from a non-English speaking country.
The age requirement is waived for a high school student who:
- Is a dually enrolled high school student** as provided for by the State School Aid Act, as amended, OR
- Is certified as having attained junior status toward graduation as determined by the high school or the home schooling association issuing the diploma. College course enrollment will be determined in accordance with the Alpena Community College ACCUPLACER placement test results for reading, language and numerical skills.
This admissions policy applies to admission to the College only and is intended to assure students of both opportunity and quality in programs. Admission to a specific curriculum or course is based on student interest, achievement, and test scores necessary for preparation to enter a specific program or course.
Placement testing is required for:
- All new Alpena Community College students who do not have A.C.T. Reading, English and Mathematics sub-scores of 18 or higher or students who do not have SAT Reading test scores of 25, Writing and Language test scores of 25 and Mathematics test score of 26.5 or higher and wish to register for more than one course*** (Note: placement tests will only be given in the subject areas where sub-score minimums were not met) OR

*Satisfactory Skills –Ability to Benefit:
Persons taking the compass placement testing must achieve subtest scores of 32 (3 on e-write), 62 and 25 or higher on the Writing Skills, Reading and Pre-algebra/Num Skills sections respectively. This test battery may be taken no more than twice in a single semester. Individuals scoring below the minimum subtest scores in all three of the areas as described above must take the college’s four course preparatory curriculum earning a C grade or above in each course, while not exceeding eight (8) credit hours, without advisor approval, in a given semester, prior to taking any other college level course. Those failing to meet the minimum scores in one or two areas described above need only take the preparatory course or courses corresponding to those areas (see table below).
