What Are Your Chances of Admission to USC?

Your chances of admission to a USC grad program depend on several factors. Before we discuss those, though, letโ€™s go over some estimates.

For most USC programs, the following GRE scores and GPA should give you an excellent shot at getting accepted:

  • If Verbal is your most important section, around 163 on Verbal, 158 on Quant, and 4.5 or higher on AW. Reading-heavy programs at USC want to see good Verbal scores but donโ€™t necessarily expect high Quant scores, so itโ€™s a good idea to aim for around the upper 150s on Quant.
  • If Quant is your most important section, around 165 on Quant, 158 on Verbal, and 4.5 on AW. With math-heavy programs at USC, itโ€™s important to get a super high Quant score. Though you usually donโ€™t have to worry about your Verbal or AW scores as much, try to get in the high 150s for Verbal and at least a 4.5 on AW.
  • 3.6 (out of 4.0) GPA or higher. Essentially, between an A- and B+ average is best. Youโ€™ll have an even better shot at standing out if you have a 4.0 (or higher, if your undergrad college calculated GPA on a weighted scale). Remember that the rigor and relevance of your coursework are important as well, so even if your GPA isnโ€™t as high as these, the difficulty of your undergrad courses could work in your favor!

Getting these GRE scores and GPA should make you a very competitive applicant for USC. However, there are a couple of caveats.

For one, GRE and GPA expectations vary significantly among USC grad programs, so you wonโ€™t always need to match the exact scores and GPA weโ€™ve given you above in order to get accepted.

Secondly, because USC is a moderately selective school, in the end even high GRE scores or a great GPA canโ€™t guarantee youโ€™ll be admitted.

Now, letโ€™s take a look at some of the most important factors that can affect your chances of admission to USC.

Famous for its Trojan football team and School of Cinematic Arts, USC comprises more than a dozen schools spanning a variety of fields, from dance and music to business, law, and medicine. Several of its professional schools, including the Rossier School of Education and Viterbi School of Engineering, are currently ranked in the top 20 by US News.

Deadlines

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering reviews applications to its graduate programs twice per year. The deadlines are:

  • For Fall semester admission, February 1.
  • For Spring semester admission, October 1.

Application Process

All applications should be submitted online using this site:Online Application to Graduate School

In addition to the basic application form, applicants should submit the following additional documentation.

  • Scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).
  • Transcripts of all prior academic work.
  • Two letters of recommendation, preferably from prior professors.
  • resume listing relevant work experience, publications, and projects.
  • For international applicants, scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing Systems (IELTS) or Duolingo English Test.

Admissions decisions can be made based on unofficial copies of test scores and transcripts, but admitted students must submit official copies to complete the admissions process.

Decision Criteria

Each application will be evaluated by a departmental admissions committee, which makes an official recommendation to the Graduate School. The Graduate School makes the final decision and notifies the applicant of the decision. Applications are evaluated based on a variety of factors, including the content and quality of prior work, the content of the reference letters, and standardized test scores. The following guidelines are generally expected, but not necessarily sufficient, for admission.
