Boise State’s Master of Science in Respiratory Care received the top spot in EduMed.org’s latest rankings of online respiratory therapy programs. The university was selected as the nation’s premier institution for this kind of program going into 2023, and only eight percent of U.S. postsecondary institutions earned a ranking position.
“Our rankings showcase the schools giving future nurses and allied health professionals the best chance to succeed from day one in the classroom to day one on the job,” said Wes Harris, outreach coordinator for EduMed.org. “This starts with low-cost tuition, but also includes academic counseling, career placement and other key resources that students need to graduate and get hired.”
EduMed.org states there is an increasing demand for trained healthcare professionals along with imminent shortages of nurse practitioner, nursing assistant and home health aide roles. Millions of vacancies in healthcare positions throughout the U.S. are projected over the next three years according to Mercer, a global healthcare consulting leader.
The website evaluated over 7,700 accredited schools using data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System, as well as from the universities. Rankings were based on tuition, academic counseling and career placement services, student-to-faculty ratio, the percent of students receiving school-based financial aid, and the amount of school-based aid per student.

Description
Respiratory Care is an allied health specialty concerned with the treatment, management, control and care of the patient’s breathing. The respiratory therapist is a specialist in the use of therapeutic and evaluation techniques in respiratory care. The respiratory care curriculum consists of a pre-professional year followed by three years of professional study, leading to a Bachelor of Science Degree in Respiratory Care. The Entry into Respiratory Care Practice Degree Program is an educational program designed to provide students who possess no prior competence in respiratory care, with the knowledge and clinical skills required to function competently as a registry-eligible respiratory therapist. The Bachelor of Science Degree is an entry into Respiratory Care Professional Practice Program. Graduates are eligible to sit for the examination of the National Board for Respiratory Care.
What is Respiratory Care?
Respiratory care is a specialized area of health care that works closely with individuals suffering from breathing and cardiac disorders. Respiratory therapists are trained on advanced medical equipment and work closely with patients to help them manage their conditions.
Our Programs
The Boise State respiratory care program is home to three distinct programs:
- On campus program for students new to the field that includes hands-on classroom education, laboratory instruction and clinical experience in local hospitals which culminates in a Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Care. This is an entry to practice program.
- Online program designed to advance associate degree registered respiratory therapists (RRT) to the Bachelor of Science degree. This program focuses on the specific skills working therapists need to obtain a bachelor’s degree. This is a degree advancement program.
- Online Master of Science in Respiratory Care program for students who want to advance their careers and the profession with a focus on educational leadership. This is a degree advancement program.
Equipping Leaders
Boise State offers a fully online program designed for active Registered Respiratory Therapists (RRT) to pursue a Master of Science in Respiratory Care (MSRC) degree. The program supports the professional advancement of RRT’s who wish to broaden the scope of their practice through the pursuit of administration and educational positions, either in an academic or healthcare setting.
Those who wish to serve as leaders and content experts in a clinical setting will gain an advanced understanding of cardiopulmonary physiology and disease management.
