The Ben Franklin Career Center is a technical and vocational school in the Charleston metro area with a focus on preparing students for college and careers. Ben Franklin offers six 1-year and twelve 2-year vocational academic programs. Additionally, Ben Franklin features five career-training programs designed for adult students. Outside of the classroom, the career center is home to several professional organizations including SkillsUSA and the National Technical Honor Society.

Ben Franklin Career Center is located in Dunbar, West Virginia. While the training center serves adults and secondary students of Kanawha County, their mission is to prepare all students to be college and career ready.

The average “out of pocket” cost of attendance, after any grants and scholarships are considered, is around $11,300. Live in Orleans Parish

Your child must live in Orleans Parish in order to attend Benjamin Franklin High School. The school cannot admit any student not residing in Orleans Parish, regardless of circumstance.

Residency in Orleans Parish must be proven with 2 of the following residency documents: 

-Lease or mortgage information                                                            -Telephone bill
-Homestead Exemption form                                                                 -Entergy bill
-Property tax bill                                                                                       -Sewerage & Water Board bill 

-Homeowners or flood insurance                                                          -Cable or internet service bill      

-Auto insurance                                                                                        -Payroll check stub with home address

-Medical insurance                                                                                  -Government Agency letter/notice 

Students must maintain Orleans Parish residency throughout their tenure at the school. Otherwise, they will be required to withdraw. 

Meet Our Academic Criteria
 
Admissions Test
 

All applicants must take the admissions test. View our Admissions Calendar for testing dates and our Admissions Policy for more information concerning testing. All students will be scheduled to take the admissions test at Franklin upon verification of  the applicant’s birth certificate and residency documents.

Grades

Students must have earned a minimum 2.0 GPA in academic courses, with no failing grades, as documented by the mid-year report card. They must maintain that GPA for the duration of the school year after admittance, and it must be confirmed by year-end report card.

Criteria for Acceptance

1) Residency in Orleans Parish that has been proven with two residency documents in the parent or legal guardian’s name. 

2) 88 matrix points (108 points for incoming juniors) are earned from a combination of your admissions test scores and your grades.  For more information, please reference our Admissions Matrix.

3) Promotion by the current school to ninth grade with no failing grades in academic subjects and a minimum 2.0 GPA in academic courses as documented by the mid-year report card. They must maintain that GPA for the duration of the school year after admittance, and it must be confirmed by year-end report card.

Unfortunately, we cannot accept incoming 12th graders, students after the school year has begun, or non-Orleans Parish residents.
