richard ivey school of business undergraduate ranking

The Richard Ivey School of Business is ranked 6th in the world for its undergraduate program!

The Ivey School of Business has been ranked by the Financial Times as the 6th best undergraduate business program in the world. This is an improvement from last year’s ranking of 7th place, and means that Ivey has climbed two spots in just one year.

In addition to its overall ranking, Ivey also performed well on several other measures: specifically, it was ranked 2nd in employer reputation, 4th in international orientation and 8th in class size.

Tracing back its origins to 1922 (and producing Canada’s oldest business journal from 1933), Ivey Business School was officially created in 1950 as the business school of the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario, Canada.

In 2010, Ivey became the first North American business school to join the CEMS Global Alliance in Management Education – a cooperation of business schools, universities with multinational companies and NGOs – joining other prestigious institutions like the London School of Economics, HEC Paris, ESADE, and Bocconi University.

There are 1,300 undergraduates and 300 graduates at Ivey.

Ivey’s undergraduate option is the bachelor of arts in honours business administration was the college’s first degree to be awarded. It includes courses in finance, accounting, marketing, operations management, organisational behavior and general management.

Graduate options are led by Ivey’s full-time MBA, created in 1948. It was Canada’s first MBA program and the first to be offered outside of the US. Modeled on the Harvard Business School MBA, the programme has relocated from the University of Western Ontario campus to the Spencer Leadership Centre, also in London, Ontario. Meanwhile, The Master of Science in Management at Ivey is designed to prepare the student for an international career and Ivey’s involvement in CEMS gives students the opportunity to participate in the Master of International Management program with students from 29 other schools in the alliance.

The Ivey executive MBA (EMBA) was founded in 1991. Ivey’s PhD in business focuses on study in eight disciplines: finance, general management, information systems, management science, managerial accounting, marketing, operations management and organisational behaviour.

Centres and institutes at Ivey include: Ben Graham Centre for Value Investing; CPA-Ivey Centre for Accounting and the Public Interest; Ian O. Ihnatowycz Institute for Leadership; International Business Institute; Ivey Energy Policy and Management Centre; Ivey International Centre for Health Innovation; Lawrence National Centre for Policy and Management; Pierre L. Morrissette Institute for Entrepreneurship and Scotiabank Digital Banking Lab.

Students at Ivey can take advantage of a number of ways to network with alumni, for example The Alumni Partnership Program where alumni mentor current students, a Get Connected event and Global Ivey Day in Toronto, both hosting a series of social and seminar events.

Notable alumni include: Sukhinder Singh Cassidy, founder and chairman of Joyus and board member at TripAdvisor and Ericsson; George Cope, president and CEO at Bell Canada; David Furnish, executive and board at Ogilvy & Mather; Arkadi Kuhlmann, chairman and CEO of the ING Group; Michael McCain, president and CEO of Maple Leaf Foods; David I McKay, president and CEO of Royal Bank of Canada and Prem Watsa, CEO of Fairfax Financial Holdings.

Many media organizations publish some sort of package which ranks business schools against each other. Most rankings measure schools on multiple dimensions with different weightings assigned to different elements.

There are some rankings dimensions that align with Ivey’s program strategies, which centre on student and recruiter satisfaction, and others that do not. On the measures that align with our strategy, we perform well and where we do not, we pay close attention and review the data to determine if there is opportunity to improve. However, we do not formulate strategy based on their results.

Choosing the right business school for you is not an easy decision and rankings don’t always make the decision easier. As a consumer, you should become familiar with ranking methodology and the dimensions each one focuses on. Beyond rankings, it’s important to consider whether a business school is a good fit for you. Prospective students should take into account everything from classroom experience, to meeting career goals and strength of alumni networks when going through the selection process.
