Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) is a university of applied learning in Singapore. The college was established in the year 2009. The university was founded by then SIT president Tan Chin Tiong and has grown from only 500 students and 10 degree programmes to over 7000 students and 42 degree programmes. The degree programmes offered by this university is clubbed majorly into five groups, namely Engineering (ENG), Infocomm Technology (ICT), Chemical Engineering and Food Technology (CEFT), Design and Specialised Businesses (DSB) and Health and Social Sciences (HSS). It was provided with the endowment of S$447.78 million. The university aims at promoting certain important traits in students, which it calls ‘SIT-DNA’. Through this, students are transformed into ‘thinking thinketers’, who can ‘learn, unlearn and relearn’, are ‘catalysts for transformation’ and are finally ‘grounded in the community.’

The main campus of the university is located in Dover Drive in Dover, Singapore. The other five campuses are around the island and mainly focus on ‘polytechnics’. The campuses are SIT@NYP (Nanyang Polytechnic), SIT@NP (Ngee Yang Polytechnic), SIT@SP (Singapore Polytechnic) and finally SIT@RP (Republican Polytechnic). SIT has the faculty student ratio of 1:41 comprising 146 academic staff members and over 7000 students.

The faculty members are well-trained and are always ready to impart knowledge to students, help them reach their full potential, and become professionals. The university believes in nurturing students who are talented and have an excellent academic record, no matter what background they belong to. SIT does this by providing a varied amount of loans and scholarships for those who need it. Some examples are the SIT study loan, tuition fee loan, Xiao De emergency fund, post-secondary education account, SIT scholarship and many others. They have helped many struggling students receive the quality education that they deserve.

Applicants, regardless of nationality, may apply with a diploma from one of the following polytechnics in Singapore:

  • Nanyang Polytechnic
  • Ngee Ann Polytechnic
  • Republic Polytechnic
  • Singapore Polytechnic
  • Temasek Polytechnic

Final semester polytechnic students can apply by submitting their results for the first five semesters of their studies.

Recently, SIT announced that they were going to offer undergraduate degrees in Speech and Language Therapy, Digital Communications and Integrated Media from the academic year 2020, the first of its kind in Singapore. The university also has several overseas partners, such as Digipen Institute of Technology, Newcastle University, Technical University of Munich, The Culinary Institute of America, Glasgow School of Art, Trinity College of Dublin, University of Liverpool, and Massey University. The UG-PG course ratio is 1:0.06. This shows that the university is better known for its PG and research programmes.

It is also widely popular for its work study programmes after the launch of the Enterprise and Innovation hub (E&I hub). Some of the noted alumni of the university include Cherine Siew – a specialist in Embedded Systems and Data Encryption, Bee Ching Kong- a specialist in Electronics Circuit Design and Testing (DCM and Information Systems for Automotive Industry), and Choon Lee Chew – Electronics Circuit Design and Semiconductor Fabricat.

5 Universities in Singapore With High Acceptance Rate

Universities in Singapore with Highest Acceptance Rates

1. NUS Business School

  • Acceptance Rate: 65%

According to our research, NUS Business School is probably the least selective institution for higher education in Singapore. It is the business school of the National University of Singapore and is consistently rated among the top schools in Asia. In 2018 it was ranked 18th worldwide and 2nd-best in Singapore. It was established in 1965 and has since attracted a wide range of international and local students. In 1966 it enrolled its first lot of 24 students who went on to graduate in 1972. Are you interested in joining NUS Business School? The institution offers programs such as Masters of Business Administration, MBA double degrees, Masters of Science in Finance, MSc in Management, and MSc in Business Analytics. With the current acceptance rate of 65%, NUS Business School is one of the universities in Singapore with highest acceptance rates.

2. Singapore University of Social Sciences

  • Acceptance Rate: 60%

As the name suggests, the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) offers degree primarily in the field of social sciences. It is the sixth autonomous university existing in the country. It was established in 2017, making it the youngest university in the country. However, it had already made a name for itself having been in operation since 2005 as SIM University. As such, it received an astounding inaugural class of 2,137 students. The number has now grown to 15,000 students enrolled in various programs offered by the institution.

It started with a quite high acceptance rate, and understandably so. However, it is currently somewhat selective with all applicants having a 60% chance of successfully applying for their programs of choice. Although it still offers business and engineering programs like before, its restructuring in 2017 saw those spots limited as the institution focused more on social sciences.

3. Singapore Institute of Technology

  • Acceptance Rate: 55%

Another university with the highest acceptance rate in Singapore is the Singapore Institute of Technology. SIT is more industry-focused and the programs it offers suggest the same. It not only confers degrees of its own but also those from partner universities within the country and overseas. Engineering, Health and Social Sciences, Chemical Engineering and Food Technology, Design and Specialized Business, and Health & Social Sciences are the five main groups of courses available at SIM.

Founded in 2009 as an autonomous university, the institution has grown quite fast and is now comprised of six campuses. The main campus is in Dover Drive while the rest are in five local Polys. The main objective of the institution in terms of development is to have a centralised campus by 2023. The new campus will be located in Punggol, and that will make it easier for the university to integrate with Punggol Digital District by JTC.

4. Singapore Management University

  • Acceptance Rate: 41%

Founded in 2000, this is one of the youngest international universities in the world. It is located in Bras Basah, and its city campus is comprised of six schools.  The current population at SMU stands at over 10,000 students enrolled in undergrad, postgrad research, and postgrad professional programs. Some of the main courses offered at SMU include business administration, accountancy, financial services, and information systems management. There are more than 20 available combinations to choose from if you decide to do a double degree. Upon completion of such programmes, you will be offered two separate degrees. It has more than 30 centres of excellence and research institutes within the campus.

Admission to Singapore Management University has become more competitive in recent years. This can be attributed to the fact that the number of applicants has increased over the years. As at now, you have 41% chance of being selected once you apply to any of the university’s programs. The university requires GMAT and IELTS/TOEFL (or other equivalent requirements in the case of international students) for most majors offered.

5. Singapore University of Technology and Design

  • Acceptance Rate: 40%

Finally on our list of universities in Singapore with high acceptance rates, there is the Singapore University of Technology and Design. It is among the first institutions worldwide to include art and science of design and technology in a multidisciplinary system. It was established in collaboration with the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2009 with the aim of nurturing technically-grounded innovators and leaders in the world of engineering. Some of the main fields covered include architecture and sustainable design, information systems, and engineering systems & design.

Considering its roots, it is no surprise that the university has put more focus on research programs. What is unique about the programs offered by SUTD is the integration of technology, management, design thinking, and entrepreneurship. That is one of the reasons why the university is currently ranked among the best in the world. Lee Kuan Yew Centre for Innovative Cities, SUTD_MIT International Design Centre, and Temasek Laboratories are some of the world-class research centres at the university.

Singapore is blessed with some of the best universities in the world. However, due to a limited number of institutions, there is bound to be a lot of competition during admission. Every year, Singapore universities welcome students from all over the world, and you could be part of the next group.
