The School of Medicine and Public Health is renowned for its Joint Medical Program (JMP) and postgraduate programs in population health. The School also has a strong research focus and pioneered the integration of multi-campus university and hospital based-research through the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI).

Nick TalleyCurrent Pro Vice-Chancellor, Global Research at the University of Newcastle, Laureate Professor Nick Talley (pictured), played a pivotal role in the JMP during his time as Pro Vice-Chancellor and Dean of Health of the Faculty of Health and Medicine from 2010-2013*. Professor Talley is an international authority in gastroenterology, recognised for outstanding contributions to his field, which have furthered global understanding of digestive diseases and advanced the science and practice of gastroenterology for more than 30 years.

Professor Talley is one of the world’s most cited experts in his field and has been published in over 1,000 original and review articles in peer-reviewed literature. Professor Talley’s expertise has seen him receive numerous awards and accolades, including the 2014 American Gastroenterological Association Distinguished Educator Award.  He has authored a number of prominent textbooks, including one of the ‘bibles’ of medicine – Clinical Examination: A Systematic Guide to Physical Diagnosis, now in its 6th edition and distributed worldwide.

Another world-renowned researcher who has been instrumental in medicine’s success is Professor Julie Byles who is Director of the Centre for Gender, Health and Ageing and who co-directs the HMRI Public Health research program.

Respected expert in gerontology and geriatrics, Professor Byles was instrumental in establishing the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women’s Health in 1995 and continues to lead it, as some of the original study participants advance into their 90s.

Since 1994, Professor Byles has taught Clinical Epidemiology at a postgraduate level, secured $30 million in external grants and produced more than 230 research papers.  Her advice is sought by the federal government and World Health Organisation to inform public health policies.

Our students learn from the world’s brightest minds, make global connections and gain the experience and skills they need to follow in the footsteps of our successful graduates – who are now working around the world to make lasting and significant contributions to health care as medical professionals

ABOUT UNIVERSITY OF NEWCASTLE

Not to be confused with Newcastle University in northern England, the University of Newcastle is a leading Australian institution located in the Australian city of Newcastle, New South Wales.

Founded in 1965, the institution has expanded rapidly since its beginnings as a teacher-training college. Three of its main campuses are based within Newcastle city centre, but the institution also has branches in campuses in Callaghan, Ourimbah, Port Macquarie and Sydney. In 2007, the University of Newcastle opened its new institution in Singapore.

Teaching and research at the university is organised into five core faculties, covering business and law, education and arts, engineering and built environment, science, and health. Research is also a major aspect of the university’s core function, and University of Newcastle researchers have won awards for the global impact of their work.

The university library consists of several buildings split across the campuses. Sports are integral to university life at Newcastle, and students have access to tennis courts, six sports pitches and an Olympic-sized swimming pool. The facilities here are so good, they’re even used by professional sports teams including the National Rugby League and the national water polo team.

Students also come to the university for its bustling outdoor social life. The city has been voted as one of the most liveable cities in the world by the likes of Lonely Planet, and is renowned for its culture and access to long, golden beaches. Sydney is around two hours away by car or train.

The university boasts a long list of notable alumni, including politicians, performers, musicians and authors. Famous names include television presenter Scott Bevan, and Sandra Eades, Australia’s first Aboriginal medical practitioner to be awarded a doctorate of philosophy.
