Shanghai Jiao Tong University English Taught Programs
Founded in 1896, Shanghai Jiao Tong University is one of the most prestigious universities in China. The main language of instruction is Mandarin, although a few undergraduate and postgraduate courses are taught in English and joint-run with English and American universities. The university has made significant contributions to the prosperity of China and the development of science and technology in the entire nation.
Today, SJTU has more than 60 undergraduate programs covering nine major disciplines – economics, law, literature, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management and arts. Its total enrollment of students is about 41,000, of which nearly 3000 are international students.
On research, the university is widely seen as one of Chinaโs best performing institutions, winning the most amount of money from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, for six years in a row up to 2015
The largest city in China, Shanghai is also its most cosmopolitan, offering visitors a chance to experience the past, present, and future all at once. The city is one of China’s most open cities ideologically, socially, culturally and economically. The Huangpu River splits Shanghai into two districts: Pudong and Puxi. The Pudong skyline looks like it was ripped from the Jetsons, with the bulbous Oriental Pearl TV and Radio Tower looking a bit like a two headed lollipop. On the Puxi side, you can walk the Bund riverside district to get a taste of old Shanghai.
This program is for Engineering majors except those majoring in ME, IE, BME and ECE. Students in these majors must apply to the LEAP-SJTU program. GEARE students should apply to the GEARE-SJTU program.
The Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA), established in 2003 and located in the heart of downtown Shanghai, has developed into one of the most influential and international schools in political science and public administration in China. Since its founding in 2003, SIPA has always prided itself in excellence in teaching, research, and service to society. SIPA trains its students to become future public officials, from mayors to local leaders.

SJTU’s semester programs in mechanical and electrical engineering are offered in English at the Joint Institute, a program affiliated with the University of Michigan. Several of the courses are also suitable for IE and BME majors.
Those with little or no Chinese language ability in majors other than ME, ECE, IE and BME may have difficulty finding a semester’s worth of courses taught in English. Purdue engineering students with advanced Chinese language ability could take regular university courses taught in Mandarin.
Students interested in this exchange program should check with their own academic unit to determine if special arrangements have been made for courses and/or research opportunities for Purdue students.
Zhejiang University English-Taught Programs
Zhejiang University is a public institution that traces its roots back to 1897. The university is located in Hangzhou, the capital of Chinaโs Zhejiang province, about 110 miles southwest of Shanghai. More than 47,000 students attend the university, and around half of them study at the undergraduate level. Zhejiang University comprises seven campuses: the main campus, Zijingang, and the Yuquan, Xixi, Huajiachi, Zhijiang, Zhoushan and Haining campuses. Tuition costs are higher for international students and vary by subject and degree level. University housing is available for both undergraduate and graduate students.
The university offers programs in a variety of disciplines, including engineering, the humanities and medicine. In all, students can choose from more than 120 undergraduate programs and well over 300 master’s programs. Doctoral programs are also available. The primary language of instruction is Chinese, but Zhejiang University also offers more than a dozen masterโs degree programs taught in English. The English-taught masterโs offerings include programs in business, China studies and engineering. The university follows a four-term academic calendar. University resources include seven affiliated hospitals and a library that houses more than 6.83 million volumes. Among the laboratory facilities at Zhejiang University are more than a dozen national key labs that focus on different specialty areas, such as the State Key Lab of Clean Energy Utilization, the State Key Lab of Rice Biology and the State Key Lab of Modern Optical Instrumentation.
