Outside scholarships are awarded to a student’s financial aid award upon receipt of the scholarship check from the donor. A number of organizations offer scholarships specifically geared toward helping international students fund their education abroad. Below is a list of scholarships some of our students have taken advantage of in the past. International students may also apply for many of the same private scholarships that domestic students are eligible for. Most domestic students receive financial aid from a variety of sources, which may include federal, state, private and institutional funds.

Federal Work Study
Federal Work Study is a federally funded program that assists students with earning income through part-time employment on or off-campus. A FAFSA must be completed to be considered for FWS. Students will need to find employment and work in order to receive funds. To accept your Federal Work Study award, sign into your CalArts Hub Self-Service portal. Prior to the start of the semester, additional instructions will be sent to you, via email, regarding the placement process and all pertinent hiring deadlines.

Award amounts do vary, but are typically $3,000 for the academic year. A student may earn up to the maximum amount, per semester, indicated on their award. Use the following equation to determine the number of hours per week you can work without going over your eligibility:

Amount Offered / Hourly wage = Total number of hours
Total hours / Number of earning weeks = Number of hours per week

Students earn at least minimum wage and sometimes more based upon the job. Students are paid bi-monthly for the hours worked. Earnings are not applied directly to your bill.

Federal Direct Subsidized & Unsubsidized Loans

A student needs to complete and submit the appropriate year FAFSA to receive consideration for Federal Direct Loans.

Direct Subsidized Loans

Direct Subsidized Loans are available to undergraduate students with financial need. The U.S. Department of Education pays the interest on a Subsidized Loan:

while a student is enrolled at least half-time
for the first six months after you leave school (referred to as grace period)
during a period of deferment (postponement of loan payments)
Direct Unsubsidized Loans

Direct Unsubsidized Loans are available to undergraduate and graduate students regardless of financial need. The student is responsible for paying the interest on the Unsubsidized Loan during all periods. If a student chooses not to pay the interest while enrolled in school and during grace and/or deferment periods, the interest will accrue and be capitalized (added to the principal loan amount).

2020-2021 Federal Direct Loan Interest Rates

The 2020-21 interest rates for Federal Direct Loans disbursed between July 1, 2020, and June 30, 2021, are as follows:

Federal Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans for undergraduate students: 2.75 percent fixed for the life of the loan.
Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan for graduate students: 4.30 percent fixed for the life of the loan.
Annual and Aggregate Loan limits

Parents of dependent students, as defined by the federal government, are eligible to apply for the Parent PLUS Loan to assist their students’ educational needs. Students must complete the appropriate year FAFSA. Eligibility for this loan will be based on a credit check performed by the Department of Education upon submission of the Parent PLUS Loan application.

To apply for the Parent PLUS Loan, visit https://studentloans.gov. The application opens on/after April 1st for each upcoming academic year. Parents must use their own FSA ID to log in to the loan application.

Once the Financial Aid Office receives the application from the Department of Education, we will update the financial aid award to reflect the approved/requested Parent PLUS Loan amount.

Parent borrowers must complete a PLUS Loan Master Promissory Note (MPN) before loan(s) will be processed and disbursed. Complete this step online at https://studentloans.gov. All loans must be processed and disbursed prior to the end of each academic semester.

In the event that a Parent PLUS Loan is denied, the student is eligible for increased Unsubsidized Loan.

Tuition Payment Plan

In an effort to help students and families meet their educational expenses, CalArts has partnered with Nelnet Campus Commerce (Nelnet) to administer a monthly payment plan. CalArts payment plan is an interest-free monthly payment plan which allows you to divide tuition and other expenses into four smaller monthly payments spread out over the semester. CalArts has a long and rich tradition of attracting and welcoming the most talented international students in the world. One out of every five students at CalArts is international, representing nearly 50 different countries. Many of CalArts distinguished faculty are also international, adding to the artistic and academic diversity of our community.

International Student Application Requirements
In addition to the general application requirements, international students must submit officially translated international transcripts and proof of English language proficiency to be considered for admissions.

International students who are accepted to the Institute will receive additional instructions for completing the Declaration of Finances form which is required to complete the I-20, and begin the student visa application process.

CalArts offers merit scholarships to international students, providing important support to ensure a high quality arts education.

International Academic Transcript
Credentials, diplomas and certificates of secondary-school and college-level work must be presented in English translation. International students applying to MFA programs must submit evidence of receipt of an undergraduate degree or its equivalent. The records must clearly state the date of completion (or the anticipated date of completion) and the level of education received with notations as to the number of hours attended per week and the total number of weeks completed.

Submission of Transcripts
Scan and upload copies of transcripts for all institutions attended. In the online application, you will be prompted to upload a PDF of your scanned documents. Please upload both the front and back sides of the transcript, even if the back side is blank.

Uploaded transcripts should be recent and include the following: your name, the institution name, dates of attendance, grades/marks received, credits, and grading legend. If no transcript is available, please upload a PDF document with a statement explaining the circumstances.

Do not mail hard copies unless from the following countries.

Graduate Applicants from India with a Three Year Bachelor’s Degree

CalArts will accept a three year Bachelor’s degree from India as equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in the US on the basis of specific criteria:

University Quality – University accredited by the NCAA with a grade of “A”
Student Performance – The degree was earned in the Division/Class I

Here are the minimum education admission documents required for a graduate program for students from India:

Final or Provisional Degree Certificate (send legible copy of document to CalArts)
Examples: Bachelor Degree, Master Degree, Postgraduate Diploma, Doctorate
Annual Statement of Marks / Academic Transcript
This is an official document issued by the institution responsible for conducting the examinations (e.g. university, constituent or autonomous college). It lists all subjects/papers taken and marks earned for each year of study. This document should be sent directly from university or autonomous college responsible for conducting examination to CalArts.

Upon Admission to CalArts
Official transcripts can be submitted electronically using any credentialing service (Naviance, Parchment, National Student Clearinghouse, Scribbles, eTranscript) or by physical mail.

Applicants from Chinese institutions may request and submit official transcripts directly through CHESICC. Requests are processed by CHESICC and will be sent electronically to the CalArts Office of Admissions. Do not submit a paper copy of your transcript if you have requested transcripts through CHESICC. Get started.

English Language Proficiency

Applicants are expected to be proficient in the English language before applying for admission. In the online application, you will be asked about native language (the language you speak at home) and your experience with English in an academic setting. Please follow the prompts in the online application in order to be considered for a language proficiency waiver. Applicants with a native language other than English, and who have not attended a school where the language of instruction is English for at least three years prior to graduation, must take the internet based version of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL ibt), the academic version of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) the PTE Academic: Pearson English Language Test or the Duolingo English Test. Minimum scores for admissions are 80 TOEFL ibt, 6.5 IELTS, 53 PTE, or 105 Duolingo for undergraduates and 100 TOEFL ibt, 7 IELTS, 63 PTE, or 120 Duolingo for graduates. The TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, or Duolingo score must be received by the Regular Application Deadline. Applications from international students with a native language other than English may not be reviewed if they do not include a TOEFL, IELTS, PTE or Duolingo score.

Please note that CalArts reserves the right to ask you to take the TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, or Duolingo English Test at any point during the application process if your English proficiency is in question.

CalArts accepts “MyBest” scores delivered directly from ETS.

IELTS

CalArts only accepts IELTS results delivered to our Electronic Download account by the IELTS test center. An institution code for IELTS is NOT required. Please contact the test center directly where you took the IELTS test and request that your test scores be sent to our E-Download account using the IELTS system. All IELTS test centers worldwide are able to send scores electronically to our institution. You must provide the following information to the test center where you took the test when requesting your scores:

Declaration of Finances
All students who are not U.S. Citizens or permanent residents of the U.S. must complete the online Declaration of Finances form after they have been accepted and submitted their Statement of Intention to Register (SIR) form. This form is to verify that you have sufficient financial resources to pay all educational and living expenses while attending the California Institute of the Arts. The U.S. consular office in your home country or the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (if you are already in the U.S.) will require this document when you apply for a student (F-1) visa.

We encourage international students to be fully prepared to fund their education and living expenses for the entire length of their time at CalArts. International students coming to the U.S. on a student visa are expected to demonstrate that they have sufficient funds available to them to support their living costs as well as their educational expenses while in the U.S.

Financial aid for international students is available in the form of merit scholarships. Since they are not eligible for federal or state financial assistance, international students are only eligible for a CalArts scholarship and/or CalArts work-study, if they qualify.

CalArts Institutional Scholarship Methodology
CalArts offers a range of financial aid options including institutional, federal, state and private funding sources. CalArts’ institutionally-funded scholarships and grants are aimed at increasing equity in CalArts classrooms and ensuring a diversity of voices have access to a CalArts education. Below is a brief description of how we award financial aid.

Step 1: Merit Scholarships
Merit Scholarships are the first component of the CalArts financial aid package.

All admitted students are considered for Merit Scholarships based on the admissions portfolio or audition. The size of these scholarships will vary depending on the school and program you have been admitted to. In some programs, your Merit Scholarship may also be supplemented through teaching assistantships, work stipends, or other forms of campus employment.

Step 2: Need-Based Aid
Federal Financial Aid Programs

There are no CalGrants, Pell Grants, or other state or federal assistance grants offered to graduate students through the State of California or the Department of Education. For domestic students, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) may qualify you to receive a Federal Work Study allocation, and is also required if you plan to take out a Federal Unsubsidized Loan. . FAFSA stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid. To apply, go to www.fafsa.ed.gov and use CalArts’ School Code 001132.

Step 3: Your Award Letter
The CalArts Financial Aid Office may reach out to you by email if we need additional documentation or information in order to accurately process your financial aid award. Check your email regularly and respond promptly to ensure we finalize your complete award package in a timely manner.

Once your financial aid package has been finalized, we will send you notification by email that your award is ready to view. At that time you will be able to log into your self-service page to see all of the components of your educational funding options. Please do not hesitate to reach out to the Financial Aid Office if you have any questions about your financial aid package, or would like to discuss other possible options for funding your education. Step 4: CalArts Scholarship Appeals
After you have received your award letter, if you would like to be considered for additional need-based scholarships from CalArts, please complete our New Student Scholarship Appeal Form. Because this is a need-based appeal, only students who have completed the FAFSA ( domestic students) or the CSS Profile (international students) will be considered.

CalArts Scholarships is provided by California Institute of the Arts. The need-based scholarships are for all international students. Scholarships are awarded on an annual basis by the Financial Aid Committee upon the recommendation of the appropriate School Dean, mentor and faculty.
