Erasmus School of Economics strives to become the best in its disciplines (economics, econometrics) and seeks to achieve excellence both in its research and teaching. This can be measured by its performance in rankings.

There are several international university rankings which Erasmus School of Economics participates in that are considered to be most influential ones. QS World University Ranking, Times Higher Education Ranking and Academic Ranking of World Universities. Most of the ranking are focused on research, but some of them became multi-dimensional in the past few years.

The above mentioned influential rankings have determined that there is a demand for a more balanced ranking system that is based on more indicators besides research. Thus, they have adjusted their methodology by incorporating more indicators, which definitely give a more balanced and accurate view of a university.


QS World University Rankings is one of such multi-faceted rankings, where Erasmus School of Economics scores particularly well when it come to Economics/Econometrics.

The research currently considers over 2,000 universities, and ranks over 700.

Six different objective indicators are used to rank world universities: alumni or staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields medals, number of researchers with most citations selected by Thomson scientific, number of articles published in journals and, of course, per capita performance with respect to the size of an institution. According to the ranking of U.S. News & World ReportOpens external Erasmus University Rotterdam belongs to the top 3 universities in Europe in the field of economics and business. Globally, only 10 universities rank higher than Erasmus University Rotterdam.

This ranking is based on research and reputation in economics, finance and management. Especially in research Erasmus University Rotterdam performs very well.

Admission requirements

Focus
All PhD projects are affiliated with one of Erasmus School of Economicsโ€™ graduate schools: Erasmus Research Institute of Management (ERIM) or the Tinbergen Institute (TI). In order to be considered for a PhD position, applicants have to meet all the admission requirement of the affiliated graduate school and any requirement mentioned in the specific PhD position.

In general Erasmus School of Economics sets the following requirements:

MPhil or Research Masterโ€™s degree in Economics, Econometrics, Mathematics or Physics is preferred, but candidates with an MSc or MA degree are also invited to apply
Excellent study results
Interest in and strong motivation for scientific research
GRE test is required for all entering students
Excellent command of English (IELTS/TOEFL)
