The University of Alabama at Birmingham, UAB Out-of-State Tuition Waiver is a competitive scholarship program for undergraduate students who are Alabama residents and have qualifying test scores. Awards are based on an evaluation of academic merit, financial need and other factors as defined within each university’s policies and guidelines.

University Of Alabama, Birmingham, out of state tuition waiver

Students applying for Summer or Fall 2022 and beyond must submit a scholarship application to be considered for merit-based scholarships. The scholarship application will be available on September 1 in the Blazer Scholarship Management and Resource Tool (BSMART).

In addition to the information you provide on your scholarship application, UAB will utilize several academic performance factors in determining scholarship awards – strength of curriculum, grades, grade point average and test scores, if you wish to have them considered. Scholarship awards are 4-year awards ranging from $6,000 to $20,000 per year.

Merit-Based Scholarship Eligibility

  • Priority Deadline – March 1
  • Test Scores – If you chose to include your test scores for admission and scholarship consideration, your February ACT and March SAT test scores from your senior year will be the last scores considered for scholarship purposes. 
  • GPA – The GPA utilized for review is the cumulative GPA submitted at the time of admission.
  • Residency – Students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

National Scholarships

UAB is a destination for academically talented students, and we love to reward your hard work. We recognize International Baccalaureate Students, National Merit Finalists, National Hispanic Recognition Scholars, National African American Recognition Scholars, National Indigenous Recognition Scholars, and National Rural/Small Town Scholars with the below levels of funding. These scholarships are stackable on any merit awards, but students are only eligible to receive ONE of the below awards.

  • National Merit Finalist – $4,000 per year ($2,000 per semester)

Admitted As Test-Optional

Students admitted without test scores are considered for scholarships based on information provided in the admission application and supporting documentation.

While the university cannot advise applicants on whether or not to apply with test scores, students can compare their test scores to these fall 2021 averages of incoming freshmen: 26.5 ACT and 3.82 GPA. Students who apply for admission with test scores of 27–36 ACT or 1260–1600 SAT with a high school GPA of at least 3.5, as well as qualifying test-optional applicants, will be invited to compete for the Golden Blaze Scholarship through answering a series of questions in BSMART, Blazer Scholarship Management, and Resource Tool.

Scholarships For International STUDENTS

The UAB International Scholarship, valued at US $7,500 per year, is available to applicants who are enrolling as first-year, full-time, degree-seeking students in an undergraduate program at UAB. Students must meet all of the following requirements to be automatically considered for this award upon admission to UAB:

  • Graduate from a secondary or high school (up to 2 years prior to intake) with a minimum grade point average of 3.0/4.0
  • Have not enrolled in post-secondary work
  • Anticipate holding an F-1 visa

The examined GPA will be the cumulative GPA at the time of admission. All scholarships are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis as funds are available and are renewable for a total of four years (or eight academic semesters). Students who are receiving governmental scholarships or other external support are not eligible to receive this award.
