Mechanical Engineering (4 ½-year) Bachelor’s Degree Overview

Mechanical engineers are curious about how things work. They are creative problem solvers who design, develop and improve products we use every day. If you want to make a positive difference in people’s lives, this is a great career.

Mechanical engineering is the broadest field of engineering. It touches every other branch. Mechanical engineers design everything from prosthetic limbs and cancer treatments to cutting-edge, alternative energy systems like offshore wind turbines.

The University of Toledo has one of the best engineering schools in the country. Our accredited programs focus on hands-on learning and practical experience.

Thanks to our unique, mandatory co-op program, mechanical engineering students graduate with a year of real-work experience and often with full-time job offers.

Mechanical Engineering (4 ½-year) Bachelor’s Degree Highlights

  • Mandatory, paid co-ops. Students spend three semesters as paid interns and often get job offers from their employers.
  • Cutting-edge facilities. Work with the latest equipment in laboratories and workshops located within our multimillion dollar, multi-building engineering complex. You’ll have access to advanced mechanic and thermal science measurement equipment; state-of-the-art, computer-aided design software; and robotic control systems.
  • Hands-on learning. UToledo mechanical engineering students get the real-world design experience they need to be competitive in the job market through:
    • Freshman design projects. Students work in teams to create a business plan and prototype using a 3D printer. This is great training for future entrepreneurs.
    • Senior design capstone course. Design and create a functional prototype to solve a problem for a real client.
    • Lab research
    • Formula SAE Car Team, which competes nationally
  • Rigorous, ABET-accredited, mechanical engineering curriculum.
  • Faculty with diverse backgrounds. Our faculty members have professional and research experience with NASA, Ford Motor Company, General Motors Co., Chrysler, the U.S. Postal Service and the U.S. Air Force.
  • Comprehensive course offerings. UToledo offers a wide array of engineering majors. This allows undergraduates to take courses in other areas of interest. Many mechanical engineering majors also minor in business administration, entrepreneurship, chemistry, biology, mathematics and more.
