The Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) is a public higher education institute in Hungary’s capital of Budapest. It offers a wide range of programs to prepare you for a career in technology, informatics, natural sciences, economics, business and management. There is a strong focus on scientific research and innovation.

BME is one of the oldest technology institutes in the world, and the first university in Europe to train engineers. The motto of the University is “Courses in Contemporary Engineering – harmonizing theory and practice”. At the University there are various opportunities for academic activities and teachers often give their own attitudes, values and viewpoints to enrich students’ learning.

Life as an international student

An increasing number of international students are studying at BME, including more than 1,900 foreign students each year and foreign professors from all over the world. The city of Budapest is home to half the country’s university students, making it a hub for meeting others.

The University campus is comprised of grand buildings as well as green space. It has a sports center, and many activities to choose from both indoors and outdoors for you to get involved in. You’ll also find restaurants, medical centers and student support centers all on campus.

Funding

Stipendium Hungaricum is a scholarship program for foreign students, founded by the Hungarian Government in 2013. The program aims to promote cultural understanding, economic and cultural relations between Hungary and other countries. Successful tudents benefit from:

  • No tuition fee
  • Monthly stipend for BA/BSc, MA/MSc and one-tier master level programs – €130 per month contribution to the living expenses in Hungary, for 12 months a year, until the completion of studies. For doctoral programs – €450 for the first phase of education and €580 for the second phase
  • Dormitory place or additional contribution to accommodation costs
  • Health care services
