Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM)

AVC Veterinary School has four departments: Biomedical Sciences, Companion Animals, Health Management, Pathology and Microbiology. 6. School History
The University of Prince Edward Atlantic Veterinary College was established in 1986. It is one of the only five schools with DVM degree in Canada and the only veterinary school in Atlantic Canada. The school awards DVM degrees, Master degrees, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees.

Admissions Information

The typical size of the first-year class at AVC Veterinary School is 60 students. They accept up to 35-40 Atlantic Canadian students and 20-25 Non-Canadian students every year. AVC Veterinary School will consider applications from Advanced Standing/Transfer Students into second year only if pending the availability of a seat.  A number of elective opportunities are also available in the third year to allow students flexibility according to their chosen career path. In the fourth year, courses consist of core and elective clinical rotations. Students have more than 50 clinical rotations to choose from, including internal medicine, surgery, anesthesiology, diagnostic services, diagnostic imaging, farm service, equine ambulatory service, wildlife health, aquaculture health, cardiology, theriogenology, and client communications.

Evaluation criteria

Your academic credentials including your Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) will be assessed by the Registrar’s Office, while other criteria and activities will be assessed by the admissions committee through an interview process.

There is no minimum overall GPA stated. The GPA of most recent entering class is 3.70 on a 4.00 scale.

• Veterinary experience 10%

Pre-requisite Course Requirements
A total of 50 points of the applicant score will be based upon grades attained in the 20 required courses (15 specified and 5 electives with the highest grades). These 50 points will be calculated as follows:

a) 30% or 15 points from the average of the four biological science prerequisite courses:

• Genetics (1)
• Microbiology (1)
• *Animal Biology Electives (2)

b) 70% or 35 points from grades in the remaining 16 required courses as listed:

• Math courses (one being statistics) (2)
• Chemistry courses (1 Organic Chemistry) (3)
• Physics course (1)
• English courses (1 Composition) (2)
• Humanities and/or Social Sciences (3)
• Electives in any area (5)

* Examples of animal biology courses include first-year general biology, cell biology, vertebrate histology, vertebrate anatomy, vertebrate physiology, vertebrate zoology, and molecular biology.

Animal/Veterinary-Related Experience

You must submit an organized and detailed description of your veterinary and animal experience within the last five years. Atlantic Veterinary College strongly encourages applicants to get experience in a wide variety of animal and veterinary related areas. The detailed description will be assessed by two members of the Admissions Committee.
