The University of Ghana (UG) has been ranked the best tertiary institution in Ghana in the January 2022 Webometrics Rankings and the World Scientific Index for 2022 by the Alper-Doger (AD) Scientific Index.
Webometrics places the University of Ghana asย first in Ghana, 11th in Sub-Saharan Africa and 1,121 in the worldย – out of 31,000 Higher Education Institutions from more than 200 countries:
The 2022 AD Scientific Index, which has more focus on the biophysical sciences, places the University of Ghanaย as first in Ghana, 15th out of the 2,049 universities in Africa, and at 1,704ย out of 14,284 universities surveyed globally.
Both Webometrics and the AD Scientific Index rank institutions based on their performance across standard indicators of excellence. These include the quality of education, the quality of faculties within an individual university, international collaborations, the number of highly cited researchers selected by Clarivate Analytics, the total number of research in the Science Citation Index-Expanded and Social Science Citation Index, as well as the number of research articles receiving a high number of citations among others.

In the recently released Webometrics World Universities Rankings on May 12, 2020, the University of Ghana popularly known as Legon ranked 17th among the top 100 in Africa for January to June 2020 making it rank number one (1) amongst the six public universities in Ghana.

Ranking 24th amongst the top 100 universities in Africa comes the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, popularly known as TECH or KNUST making it rank second (2nd) amongst universities in Ghana.
Established in 1951, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology currently has a student population of nearly 23,000 and offers courses ranging from art, business, law, science, and technology. The university was affiliated to the University of London and in 1961, was granted full university status. In November 2019, KNUST was ranked as the best university in Ghana and West Africa by the U.S News and World Report.

The University of Cape Coast is a public collegiate research university located in Cape Coast, Ghana. The University of Cape Coast was established in 1962 out of a dire need for highly qualified and skilled manpower in education. It was established to train graduate teachers for second cycle institutions such as teacher training colleges and technical institutions, a mission that the two existing public universities at the time were unequipped to fulfill.
The university has since added to its functions the training of doctors and health care professionals, as well as education planners, administrators, legal professionals, and agriculturalists.
