Program
The Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Sydney is structured as a four-year program where teaching is research-driven to ensure you will learn from the latest developments and advances in evidence-based practice, veterinary science research, animal behaviour and welfare science and veterinary public health. You will benefit from clinical exposure, clinical skills training and animal handling commencing in the first semester and continuing throughout the course.
Clinical case examples are used throughout the program to demonstrate the relevance of each topic in understanding the complexities of animal diseases including their diagnosis, treatment and prevention.
Training in professional and clinical skills forms an essential part of the course program, commencing in DVM Year 1 and consisting of interactive small-group practical classes and intra- and extramural placements.
Year 1 employs a body-systems approach to learning about the basic veterinary sciences (anatomy, physiology, and histology) within a medical context.
During Year 2, you will develop skills in disease investigation by examining common disease syndromes and investigating the causes of disease (pathobiology, infectious diseases, pharmacology).
Year 3 builds on the knowledge and skills attained during years 1 and 2, and you will develop an advanced approach to maintaining health and managing disease across the major companion, exotic and production animal species. Third year is mostly based at the Camden campus, with some learning and teaching activities based at the Camperdown campus.
Year 4 is a capstone experience combining intramural (in University Veterinary Teaching Hospitals) and extramural (in industry and private veterinary practices) placements. These extramural placements may be taken at any approved Australian or international industry or private veterinary practice.

Admission Requirements
1. Completed bachelor’s degree
You must have a completed undergraduate degree in any discipline.
You must have completed prerequisite units of study (one semester each) in general chemistry (physical and inorganic), organic chemistry, biology, and biochemistry; and must have obtained a minimum 70% average where 50 is the pass mark, or 75% where 60 is the pass mark, although please note this is not competitive.
As places are limited and there is a strict quota for this course, entry is highly competitive. Students who have achieved the minimum GPA (and other admission requirements) are then ranked on academic performance. The higher your GPA, the better your chances of receiving an offer, so the higher your GPA, the better your chances of receiving an offer. Based on previous intakes, a competitive GPA starts at approximately 85%+ (cumulative) in an applicant’s most recent bachelor degree.
2. Animal handling experience
You must have completed a minimum of 28 days (4 weeks) of relevant work and animal-handling experience, including animal production industries such as sheep, cattle, pigs, goats, horses and poultry; veterinary clinical practice; or other relevant animal industry experience including government bodies, charities, and research organization.

How the admissions criteria will be used for domestic applications
Due to high demand, admission for domestic candidates is highly competitive. All applicants will be ranked for
offers of admissions as follows:

Grade Point Average (GPA)
All applicants must have completed or be in the final year of a bachelor’s degree at the time of application.
The GPA is calculated over the entire duration of the bachelor’s degree and all years of study are weighted
equally. Results from completed Honours and postgraduate coursework degrees are considered in the GPA
calculation. The discipline of the bachelor’s degree is not considered during the ranking process.
Where a student has attempted more than one bachelor’s degree program:
a. the GPA used shall be from the completed bachelor’s degree only, incomplete degree results will not be
included; and
b. where there are more than one completed bachelor’s degrees, the best GPA will be used.
