SUNY Maritime College has a long and storied history as one of the oldest colleges in the country. It was founded in 1874 and has produced notable alumni who have gone on to become successful leaders in their fields.

One such name is Captain John F. Kennedy Jr., who graduated from SUNY Maritime with a degree in English Literature in 1962. He then went on to serve as an officer in the United States Navy before becoming a journalist and publisher of The Boston Globe. He was tragically killed when his plane crashed off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard in 1999.

Another famous alumnus is author Philip Roth, who graduated from SUNY Maritime in 1953 with a bachelor’s degree in English Literature. His novels include Portnoy’s Complaint (1969), American Pastoral (1997), and The Human Stain (2000).
