In order to be considered for admission to a physiotherapy degree programme at Cardiff University, you will be required to meet the following entry requirements:

You must have obtained an overall average mark of at least 70% (65% if you are applying for an accelerated programme) on your previous academic study at A Level or IB Diploma. If you have not studied at A Level or IB Diploma please refer to our alternative entry requirements below.

Your placement learning takes place across Wales and takes up about one third of the course. Placements are an essential part of the course and they will give you the confidence and skills to practice physiotherapy professionally in real-life situations with qualified professionals supervising and supporting you. Placement learning also helps you gain insight as to the wide-ranging employment opportunities available to you upon qualification.

Academic requirements

UK honours degree 2:1 (or equivalent) in a discipline related to physiotherapy that contained a substantial element of human physiology within its programme of study.

Experience of the process of research is essential.

A diploma or degree in physiotherapy is not appropriate.

Additional requirements

Before applying to the course, it is recommended that you are aware of the diverse nature of physiotherapy practice.

Relevant visits to hospitals, voluntary work or part-time employment in an area where the impact of disability is experienced is desirable.

Selection will be based on your educational qualifications, academic references, medical fitness and interview performance.

Students must be able to undertake the role of physiotherapists from a fitness point of view. If applicants have queries in relation to this aspect they should contact a member of the admissions team to discuss their individual requirements. On commencing the course all students will have to undertake occupational health screening.

As a physiotherapist criminal records are not deemed as spent under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (1974) (Exceptions) Order 1975. If you have a criminal conviction, we ask you to contact a member of the admissions team to discuss the impact on your suitability for eligibility to apply for registration with the regulatory body, and employability.

COURSE INFORMATION

Our aim is to help you become a confident and independent physiotherapist. We want you to make informed decisions about the best way to care for your patients.

You’ll be based in our contemporary Brooks building, with access to our real-world clinical equipment and facilities.

Day-to-day, you’ll be taught using a variety of methods including lectures, tutorials, group work and practical classes.

You’ll practice your skills and techniques during simulated patient scenarios in our physiotherapy practice rooms. We have seven dedicated practice rooms which are available for you to book out, giving you a safe space to develop your expertise in a supportive environment.

It takes practical as well as academic training to gain the skills you need to become a physiotherapist. And nothing beats hands-on experience in a clinic – that’s why you’ll spend one-third of this course on placements, completing them in each year of study.

Health Checks

To study on our BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy programme, you are required to complete an Occupational Health Assessment.

This is to make sure that your health isn’t a barrier to achieving the programme learning outcomes or your eligibility to apply for registration with the professional body.

This requires the completion of a health questionnaire before or during the first few weeks of your course, followed by an occupational health screening appointment if required. Appointments are held within the Greater Manchester area and the University does not cover travel costs.

Professional Suitability

When you study for a degree course leading to professional qualifications at Manchester Met, we require you to follow professional standards and codes of practice during your studies.

Course Specific Regulations

Professional, statutory and regulatory bodies require students to achieve results that demonstrate their ability to practise safely.

Therefore, there are some exceptions to the standard University Assessment Regulations for those students, for example, limitations on exam resits and on compensation of failed marks.

Placement options

We have a dedicated placements team to manage and negotiate our placement partnerships. This means that, as a physiotherapy student at Manchester Met, you have access to relevant, motivating and professional placements.

Placements we arrange take place mainly within NHS institutions and there are a few placements within private healthcare settings. There are also opportunities to participate in contemporary digital health placements as part of your overall placement experience.

Your physiotherapy placements help you to apply the knowledge and skills you learn in the classroom to a real-world setting.

In the past, physiotherapy was only available as a postgraduate degree but now Cardiff University has introduced a four-year undergraduate programme which allows students to study for a degree before starting their professional training. This means that upon graduating from Cardiff University students will be able to apply for registration with the Health Professions Council (HPC).

The course allows students to gain a breadth of knowledge across human biology, anatomy and physiology as well as biomechanics and kinesiology through lectures and practical sessions. Students also have access to a range of clinical placements including neurological rehabilitation services at Cardiff University Hospital or the Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Llantrisant.
