Overview

Veterinary Technology is an AVMA accredited, professional technical program that gives motivated individuals an opportunity to combine their love of animals with their interest in science and medicine. The program prepares students to work in a variety of veterinary medical related settings. Upon program completion students will be eligible to sit for national examination for licensure. VET TECH SCHOOLS IN IDAHO

Fortunately for aspiring veterinary technicians in ID, there is a range of training options to join the profession. At this stage, Idaho vet techs are strongly encouraged to seek out two- to four-year programs in veterinary technology accredited by the Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities (CVTEA), the American Veterinary Medical Association’s (AVMA) program-approval organization.

Not only does graduating from a CVTEA-accredited program set a person up to take the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE)—the predominant credentialing exam for vet techs nationwide—but it’s also a prerequisite to becoming a certified veterinary technician (CVT) in Idaho unless a person secures special permission from the Board.

To qualify for a CVTEA-accredited program in veterinary technology, Idaho candidates must submit the following:

• Official high school transcripts
• Proof of having completed course prerequisites (e.g., biology, algebra, chemistry, English, etc.)
• Personal statement (500-600 words)
• Proof of health insurance and/or vaccinations
• Application fee

Additionally, it behooves applicants to have some experience working with animals, and some programs may ask candidates for additional materials such as letters of recommendation, test scores, or candidate interviews.

As of December 2021, there is one CVTEA-accredited program in Idaho.

College of Southern Idaho

The College of Southern Idaho in Twin Falls provides an accredited AAS program in veterinary technology providing motivated professionals with an opportunity to combine their interest in medicine and science with their love of animals. Students in this program will be prepared to work in a variety of veterinary medical-related settings and will be eligible to sit for the national examination for licensure.

The program offers advanced training in radiology, anesthesiology, clinical pathology, surgical assisting, and hospital management. Students in this program learn to administer oral, intravenous, intramuscular, and subcutaneous medications; place IVs; prepare animals for radiography; monitor animals with blood pressure readings, ECGs & blood gas analysis; collect urine, blood & samples from feces for analysis; and much more.

Courses for this 68-credit program include animal nursing and restraint; animal health records systems; veterinary pharmacology; anesthesiology; applied radiology; animal diseases; and more. Notably, an impressive 79 percent of CSI graduates between 2018 and 2021 passed the VTNE on their first attempt, higher than the national average during that period.

Before you choose an online course or program

A student’s goals may differ when evaluating online courses and programs, and quality is often a key consideration. The College of Southern Idaho is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. A peer-reviewed process has ensured that CSI meets or exceeds the criteria for the assessment of institutional quality. As a student in one of our online classes, here is what that will mean for you:

• All CSI instructors’ course syllabi will inform you of required campus meetings, authentication measures, test dates, and special equipment needed (such as webcam, speakers, headset, etc.). Additionally, you will learn about test-taking procedures, test sites, associated fees, student responsibility, including code of conduct, and Student Right to Know information via course syllabi. 
• CSI will verify your identity when you participate in an online course by requiring the use of a secure sign-in and password. All of your online work will be submitted via the college’s LMS (Canvas) or by CSI email, the college’s official email system. • The course outcomes you would meet in a face-to-face class will be the same as you will meet in an online class. The course content and course outcomes remain the same in all modalities.

DEGREE-SEEKING STUDENTS

Students who intend to earn a degree from CSI must have completed high school or equivalent (homeschool, GED or HSE) or be 19 years of age or older at the time of enrollment. Degree-seeking students may be eligible for Federal Financial Aid.

Apply for admission to CSI (available online at mycsi.csi.edu).

Submit official high school transcript showing graduation date. Submit official college transcript(s) from all colleges attended.

Submit English and mathematics placement scores. CSI uses the ALEKS Placement, Preparation, and Learning for math placement, and THE WRITE CLASS for English placement. Students may be exempt from institutional testing with qualifying scores on the ACT, SAT, or COMPASS exam or with completed college level coursework that appears on an official college transcript. All students are strongly recommended to complete THE WRITE CLASS regardless of test scores.

ACCEPTANCE TO LIMITED ENROLLMENT MAJORS AT CSI

Some CSI programs have additional requirements for admission. Students applying for Career Technical Education (CTE) programs or Registered Nursing should contact the program of interest for complete admission requirements. Departments will communicate with applicants regarding the status of their acceptance into their selected major of study and any additional steps the student must take.

NON-DEGREE STUDENTS

Students who intend to take courses for personal enrichment rather than towards the completion of a degree of certificate are not eligible for Federal Financial Aid.

Apply for admission to CSI (available online at mycsi.csi.edu). Select Non-Degree as program of interest (major).

Submit placement scores or official college transcripts for courses that require pre- or co-requisites.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

International applicants are those students holding F, M, and J visas. This school is authorized under Federal law to enroll nonimmigrant students. International applicants whose first language is not English must demonstrate acceptable levels of English proficiency through an approved examination or institutional review in order to be admitted. Examples of approved examinations include TOEFL and IELTS (see http://www.csi.edu/international/prospectiveStudents/checklist.asp for specific scores) or demonstration of acceptable proficiency on the CSI ESL Placement exam. Additionally, students falling below levels of examination-defined proficiency or who are unable to provide placement information, may request a case-by-case institutional review, on the recommendation of an institutional faculty or staff member.

Submit the international student application for admission and meet the requirements specified below before an I-20 will be issued. Students must then submit the I-20 to the American Consulate to receive a student visa.

Submit TOEFL, IELTS or the CSI ESL placement exam scores.

Request a certification of finances and a bank statement in US dollars. This must be sent directly from your bank to the College.
