How to Get a Full Scholarship to Law School - JD Advising

The LSAT stands for Law School Admissions Test, which is required by all law schools in order for students to apply. In order to get accepted into any law school program, you will need an LSAT score that falls within the middle range of scores that are accepted by most programs in the country. For example, if you have a 168 on the LSAT then your chance of getting accepted into any program would be very high because that would put you above average in terms of scores accepted by most programs around the country (average LSAT score). However, if your score falls below average then it might be difficult getting accepted into certain programs depending on how competitive they are. Scholarship Opportunities

  • Charles Evan Hughes Scholarship

We are pleased to invite admitted students to apply for Cornell Law Schoolโ€™s most prestigious merit scholarship named in honor of Charles Evans Hughes, a former Cornell Law School faculty member and governor of New York State. Hughes was a philanthropist, politician, conservationist, and educator. Throughout his career, he moved between the private and public sectors, holding office at the highest levels of state and federal government. He was an early 20th Century visionary โ€” a lawyer in the best sense.

The Charles Evans Hughes Scholars (CEHS) program seeks to recognize a select number of incoming law students who have demonstrated a commitment to academic excellence, public service, and civic and social engagement.

For consideration, complete and submit:

  • Statement of Purpose โ€“ A one- to two-page narrative in a format of your choice submitted as a Word or PDF attachment. The statement should include a narrative of your personal and professional aspirations and how being a CEHS scholar will help effectuate your goals; and
  • The Cornell Law School Scholarship Application.

The deadline to submit your CEHS application is Friday, February 25, 2022. CEHS finalists will be notified by email on Tuesday, March 1, 2022. Finalistsโ€™ interviews will be conducted via zoom on Saturday, March 12 and Saturday, March 19 .

You may email your application to jdadmitted@cornell.edu, or submit by fax to (607) 255-4656. You should reference CEHS Application in the subject line.

*If you have already received a scholarship and are subsequently awarded the Charles E. Hughes scholarship, the Hughes scholarship will supersede all previous scholarship offers.

About Charles Evans Hughes

Charles Evans Hughes, the man for whom Hughes Hall is named, joined the Cornell Law School faculty in 1891 when the school was just five years old โ€” Hughes was twenty-nine. He graduated from Brown University and went to law school at Columbia before coming to teach at Cornell. One of his first students, Myron C. Taylor, would later look back on Hughes as an early mentor.

After just two years, Hughes was forced to return to private law practice in New York City to better support his young family โ€” and perhaps because his father-in-law, an eminent lawyer, thought serving on the Cornell faculty was โ€œa grave mistake.โ€ He worried about his grandchildren being raised in a โ€œone-horse town like Ithaca.โ€

In 1906, with backing from fellow Republican Theodore Roosevelt, Hughes defeated famed publisher William Randolph Hearst for the office of governor of New York, an office he held for two terms. He resigned as governor in 1910 to accept a position as an associate justice of the United States Supreme Court, then stepped down from the court in 1916 to make a bid for the presidency. He was narrowly defeated by incumbent Woodrow Wilson.

After serving as Secretary of State from 1921 to 1925, he was nominated in 1930 by President Herbert Hoover to serve as Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. When Franklin D. Roosevelt became president, Chief Justice Hughes led a fractious and controversial court in numerous confrontations between the judicial and executive branches involving much of the presidentโ€™s New Deal legislation.

Known as a master of consensus-building, Hughes was a prolific and talented writer, penning twice as many opinions as any of his contemporaries on the Supreme Court. Retiring from the court in 1941, he died in 1948. When it came time to name the Law Schoolโ€™s new residence center, Myron Taylor expressed his wish to honor the life and career of his former teacher.

what is a good lsat score for scholarships

Next, we review what is a good lsat score for scholarships, what lsat score do i need for cornell, Cornell Law School Tuition 2022 and cornell law school acceptance rate.

Future law students, especially those who intend to practice in the private sector: you know your LSAT score is the single most important quantitative aspect of your law school applications, but you probably donโ€™t realize how profoundly the LSAT affects your financial future. The new LSATMax white paper, Benefits of a Good LSAT Score, is a must-read for anyone considering attending law school.

Based on findings from ABA disclosures and the Law School Survey of Student Engagement, the white paper examines your LSAT scoreโ€™s effect on your future earnings, debt burden, and the cost of a legal education in three ways:

  • Examines how school rankings (and their respective LSAT medians) affect first-year legal salaries
  • Reveals the secrets of law school โ€œmerit scholarships,โ€ which are really more like tuition discounts awarded to students with high LSAT scores
  • Compares the job and earnings prospects of two hypothetical students with a 14-point difference in their LSAT scores

Whether or not youโ€™re a fan of the LSATโ€”and unless youโ€™re among the roughly 1% of students who find obtaining a high LSAT score easy, you probably arenโ€™tโ€”the white paper makes clear that no test-taker can afford to do less than their best. Not only will a subpar LSAT score hold you back from attending the schools that send the most students to high-paying employers, it could affect you for the rest of your career, as you take on more debt and receive a lower first-year salary than peers with higher LSAT scores.

Unfortunately, as the white paper concludes, law schoolsโ€™ merit scholarship policies create an LSAT-driven financial hierarchy among law students. High-scoring students pay less in tuition than their peers, even at the same school. And those with merit scholarships tend to graduate with lower student loan burdens. Effectively, low-scoring studentsโ€™ higher tuition subsidizes the legal education of high-scoring students.

A handful of law schools have eliminated all merit scholarships, instead distributing financial aid solely on the basis of need. These schools, however, are mostly high-ranking and selective, meaning lower scorers are unlikely to be admitted at all. Students with lower LSAT scores are left in a vicious double-bind, rejected from higher-ranking law schools and overcharged at lower-ranking law schools.

More Surprising Findings from LSATMaxโ€™s New White Paper

Did you know that 90% of students with LSAT scores between 166 and 180 will receive merit scholarships, compared to only 16% of those with an LSAT score below 140? That huge differential holds even at schools known for their generosity. For instance, Washington University in St. Louis (ranked 17th by USNWR) offer at least half-tuition scholarships to nearly 80% of incoming students.

In the full white paper, youโ€™ll also learn:

  • How merit scholarships correlate with total debt burden upon graduation
  • What LSAT score youโ€™ll need in order to attend one of the 23 law schools whose graduates have the highest median private-sector starting salaries, at $180,000
  • Why graduates who attend lower-ranking law schools may graduate with less total debt, but a much higher debt burden as a factor of their earning potential
  • Which economic conditions and market innovations created the current โ€œmerit scholarshipโ€ economy in law schoolsโ€”a system of deceptive pricing that would have been unthinkable even 15 years ago
  • Why median starting salaries for graduates of schools with LSAT medians around 150 are as little as 27% of what graduates of higher-ranking schools earn

Earnings, debt, and scholarship data show students who score around the 50th LSAT percentile (151-152) are left hamstrung financially if they choose to attend law school, while those below the 50th percentile may be unable to attend at all. This tracks with the conventional wisdom that students unable to gain admission to a top law school should choose a different career path. Yet, every admissions season, thousands of passionate future lawyers choose to take on crushing debt at lower-ranking law schools.

So whatโ€™s the path forward? Well, as the white paper makes clear, itโ€™s worth spending time and money improving your LSAT score before applying to law schoolโ€”in fact, their hypothetical case study suggests the value of a single LSAT point may be as much as $7,000 in the first year of private sector employment.

Compare that to the cost of LSAT prep with LSATMax: as little as $749.99 for lifetime access to a self-paced online LSAT course, and as little as $33.33 per hour for semi-private tutoring when you split sessions with three fellow students. If you donโ€™t improve your LSAT score after completing the LSATMax digital course, youโ€™ll receive a full refund.

cornell law school acceptance rate

Despite contending with a global pandemic as they prepared to apply for and enroll in law school, Cornell Law Schoolโ€™s entering class of 2024 came in strong. In fact, it is the most credentialed matriculating class in the schoolโ€™s history.

The 2021 law school application cycle was surprisingly robust across the country, with the Law School Admissions Council reporting a 12.6 percent increase in applicants and increases in LSAT participation in nearly every ethnicity and gender over the previous year.

โ€œI believe the pandemic created a thirst for in-person study because of a lack of sustained in-person interaction, be it in education or employment,โ€ says Associate Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid Monica Ingram. โ€œOur first-year professors have also remarked on the heightened level of first-year student engagement.โ€

Cornell Law outperformed both national and regional numbers, with 41.46 percent more applications in 2021 than 2020. This deeper pool of applicants allowed the school to enroll a larger entering class despite a more selective acceptance rate of 15.4 percent, down from 19 percent the year before. This incoming class has a median LSAT score of 171, in the 96.2nd percentile, and a median GPA of 3.86.

Ingram observes, โ€œThere were so many unexpected variables encountered during the previous year and a half that we were unsure what the class of 2024 would experience prior to enrollment. Prospective students who demonstrated an ability to โ€˜roll with the changesโ€™ had desirable qualities, in addition to their anticipated law school performance. We needed students who were not only intelligent and capable but also flexible.โ€

The 204 students of the Class of 2024 hail from diverse backgrounds. Thirty-one percent are considered nontraditional law school students, having completed their undergraduate programs more than two years prior to enrollment. The youngest incoming student is twenty; the oldest is forty-one. Three and a half percent hold masterโ€™s degrees. Thirty-one percent are nonwhite and 54.5 percent are women.

One of those women was already a Cornell University standout. Grace Traore, from Brooklyn, is continuing her studies at the Law School after completing an undergraduate degree at the School of Industrial and Labor Relationsโ€”and participating in several of the universityโ€™s student singing and dancing groups, including delivering a solo when the Dorothy Cotton Jubilee Singers performed at Carnegie Hall.

Others had a bit farther to travel. Two of the incoming students had met with Ingram when she traveled to St. Andrews, Scotland, just before the pandemic interrupted international travel. A year and half later, Lydia Mackey and Zoe-Pascale de Saxe Roux made their way to Ithaca.

โ€œWhile studying at the University of St. Andrews, I was fortunate enough to attend a law school admissions event where Dean Ingram spoke about the importance of community at Cornell Law School,โ€ says Mackey. โ€œThis was an important factor in my decision to attend Cornell, and I have found a supportive community here beyond what I could have ever expected. Every interaction I have with faculty, staff, and my fellow students shows how much they care about my wellbeing and success, as I care about theirs.โ€

Cornell Law Review Elects All-Female Board, First of Top 14 Law Schools | The Cornell Daily Sun

Says Saxe Roux, โ€œI was galvanized by Cornell Law Schoolโ€™s goal to emphasize diversity and opportunity for students of a variety of backgrounds. The conversation I had with Dean Ingram centered those aspirations at the core of her discourse. As I am a member of the LGBTQ+ community, that aim was not just inspiring in terms of the law school I wished to attend but also reemphasized the reasons I wanted to become a practicing attorney.โ€

These three represent just a small slice of a class whose students have come to Cornell from thirty-three states and eleven countries and have graduated from 123 different colleges and universities with majors comprising more than fifty different subjects.

Nearly five percent of the entering class is part of the 3+3 program, which allows highly qualified undergraduate students to take an accelerated path to their law degree by transitioning to law school after three years of undergraduate study and forgoing the LSAT. The program was reestablished by faculty vote in 2014 and has grown from one participant in 2016 to ten this year. It is exclusive to Cornell University and Hobart and William Smith Colleges.

โ€œThe Class of 2024 is the most well-credentialed class to have entered the doors of Myron Taylor Hall,โ€ says Jens Ohlin, Alan R. Tessler Dean and Professor of Law. โ€œThese are all exceptionally talented individualsโ€”many of whom aced the LSAT or persevered to graduate at the top of their undergraduate programs.โ€

He adds,ย โ€œNeedless to say, these 1L students are well poised to succeed at Cornell Law School and ultimately as legal professionals.ย We are excited to watch the many ways they will engage and contribute to this intellectual community over the next three years and beyond.โ€

It is a good thing to go for Cornell Law School Scholarships if you are going to be able to get into the school. This applies to anyone who is looking for more money because getting more money makes life more convenient. It is a fact that the amount of money can be considered as something that contributes to the quality of life and this is why you ought to look into all possibilities.
