university of pittsburgh test optional

As part of the Universityโ€™s ongoing commitment to access for all students, Pitt has extended its test-optional policy through Fall 2023. This initiative will help ensure that no student is denied the opportunity to be considered for admission as a result of cost, travel, time away from home potentially related to test-taking and/or other barriersโ€”especially as the challenges with SAT and ACT Test Center accessibility continue.

Pitt is a test-optional institution for most programs. This means a student may choose to submit ACT or SAT scores if he/she feels that these scores will add value to his/her application.

We believe that in order to diversify the University of Pittsburgh’s student population in an academically enriching way, it is important to take into account factors in addition to standardized test scores. Consequently, the Office of Undergraduate Admissions will continue to review applications without requiring SAT or ACT scores. We do expect students who choose not to submit standardized test scores to submit four SAT Subject Test scores or two ACT Subject Test scores that they have already completed. The University is doing this in the spirit of embracing the widely held belief that students, families, high schools and counselors are best positioned to decide when standardized testing is appropriate for them.

The Admission Committee will be looking for a strong upward trend in your grades over the most recent semesters. In order to demonstrate a complete academic picture, we will also be looking for evidence of your preparation for college-level coursework through post-secondary courses and Honors, AP, IB, and dual enrollment at both the high school and community college level. A strong application might also include compelling extracurricular activities.

The Admission Committee will consider your extracurricular activities, experiences, and/or responsibilities outside of the classroom as part of a holistic review. Take advantage of clubs and opportunities offered by your school (and often overlooked by many applicants) to demonstrate your commitment to service and leadership. The personal statement is a great opportunity for students to share anything that would not be covered in other parts of their application โ€“ a special talent, an unusual experience โ€“ anything that gives the Admissions Committee a better understanding of who you are.
