Theย University of Cambridgeย is aย collegiateย research universityย inย Cambridge, United Kingdom. Founded in 1209[9]ย and granted aย royal charterย byย Henry IIIย in 1231, Cambridge is the second-oldest university in theย English-speaking worldย and the world’sย fourth-oldest surviving university, as well as one of the most prestigiousย academic institutionsย in the world.[10][11]ย The university grew out of an association of scholars who left theย University of Oxfordย after a dispute with the townspeople.[12]ย The two Englishย ancient universitiesย share many common features and are jointly referred to asย Oxbridge.

Cambridge is formed from a variety of institutions which includeย 31 semi-autonomous constituent collegesย andย over 150 academic departments, faculties and other institutions organised into six schools. All the colleges are self-governing institutions within the university, each controlling its own membership and with its own internal structure and activities. All students are members of a college. Cambridge does not have a main campus, and its colleges and central facilities are scattered throughout the city.ย Undergraduate teachingย at Cambridge is organised around weekly small-groupย supervisionsย in the colleges โ€“ a feature unique to the Oxbridge system. These are complemented by classes, lectures, seminars, laboratory work and occasionally further supervisions provided by the central university faculties and departments.ย Postgraduate teachingย is provided predominantly centrally.

Cambridge University Press, a department of the university, is the oldest university press in the world and currently the second largest university press in the world.ย Cambridge Assessment, also a department of the university, is one of the world’s leading examining bodies and provides assessment to over eight million learners globally every year. The university also operates eight cultural and scientific museums, including theย Fitzwilliam Museum, as well as aย botanic garden.ย Cambridge’s libraries, of which there are 116, hold a total of around 16ย million books, around nineย million of which are inย Cambridge University Library, aย legal deposit library. The university is home to, but independent of, theย Cambridge Unionย โ€“ the world’s oldest debating society. The university is closely linked to the development of the high-techย business clusterย known as ‘Silicon Fen’. It is the central member ofย Cambridge University Health Partners, anย academic health science centreย based around theย Cambridge Biomedical Campus.

By bothย endowment sizeย and consolidated assets, Cambridge is the wealthiest university in the United Kingdom.[13]ย In the fiscal year ending 31 July 2019, the central university, excluding colleges, had a total income of ยฃ2.192ย billion, of which ยฃ592.4ย million was from research grants and contracts.[4]ย At the end of the same financial year, the central university and colleges together possessed a combined endowment of over ยฃ7.1ย billion and overall consolidated net assets (excluding ‘immaterial’ historical assets) of over ยฃ12.5ย billion.[15]ย It is a member of numerous associations and forms part of the ‘golden triangle’ of English universities.

Cambridge has educated manyย notable alumni, including eminent mathematicians, scientists, politicians, lawyers, philosophers, writers, actors, monarchs and other heads of state. As of Octoberย 2020,ย 121 Nobel laureates,ย 11 Fields Medalists,ย 7 Turing Award winnersย and 14ย British prime ministersย have been affiliated with Cambridge as students, alumni, faculty or research staff.[16]ย University alumni have won 194ย Olympic medals.[17]
