Essential Information
Georgia has about five schools with architecture programs, four of which are profiled below. Most programs focus on the traditional architecture of buildings, but one school offers programs in landscape architecture. Studies in landscape architecture are offered at the bachelor’s and master’s degree levels. Individuals interested in studying building architecture can find bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in the field, as well as minor and certificate programs.
Georgia Institute of Technology
Atlanta’s Georgia Tech offers numerous architecture certificate and degree programs in the College of Architecture, which is divided into five schools and contains five research centers. Students in any major can earn a minor in architecture, and undergraduate students can enroll in one of two architecture-focused certificate programs; these programs focus on sustainable architecture and computational design. Students in these programs must complete 12 credits.
In the pre-professional bachelor’s program, students may learn basic design concepts and complete studio courses. Additional classes may cover building technology and architecture history. The bachelor’s program also offers an international option so students can learn about architecture from a worldly perspective. Students in this program must become fluent in a foreign language, take courses with an international focus and study abroad.
The non-professional Master of Science in Architecture program requires 30 credits and offers concentrations in digital design and fabrication, health and design and high performance buildings.
The NAAB-accredited Master of Architecture program has a pre-professional and professional option; students with bachelor’s degrees in architecture can apply as well as those with bachelor’s degrees in other fields. Students with undergraduate training in architecture can finish the program after completing 60 credits; this curriculum is broken down into 18 credits of design studio courses, 12 credits of architecture courses, 21 credits of elective coursework and a project or thesis. Students without an undergraduate architectural background must complete 108 credits that include 33 credits of design studio classes, 15 credits of foundational courses, 30 credits of core classes, 21 credits of electives and a project or thesis.
Those interested in working in city building may prefer the dual Master of Architecture-Master of City and Regional Planning program. The curriculum includes the core requirements for both degree programs so students may learn about urban design, development projects, design objectives and architectural issues.
Georgia Tech also offers a doctoral program in architecture for individuals who want to conduct research in specific areas of architecture. Students can choose from five research emphasis areas: history and culture, evidence-based design, organizational and cognitive performance, design computation and building technology. In addition to coursework, students complete a qualifying paper, comprehensive exam and doctoral thesis.
Graduate students can participate in three study abroad programs. One option takes students to Spain, Germany and Denmark to study modern architecture, while another option allows students to study in Barcelona. The third option occurs during the summer and takes students to Greece and Italy.
Kennesaw State University
This Marietta-based university offers a minor in architecture, a Master of Science in Architecture, and Georgia’s only 5-year professional Bachelor of Architecture program, which is NAAB-accredited. The minor is open to students majoring in a field other than architecture. The nine classes required for the minor introduce students to design fundamentals, architectural computer applications and architecture history.
The first two years of the bachelor’s program provides a design foundation, while the last three years focus on the professional portion. Before students can begin the professional curriculum, they must pass a portfolio review. Several studio courses are taken in the professional portion, and students design a variety of small-, medium- and large-scale projects. In the final year, students complete independent, comprehensive projects.
A plethora of resources are available to Kennesaw State architecture students, including the Architectural Library, Material Resource Lab, galleries and community design assistance lab. Architecture students may also be eligible for multiple scholarships. Students who want to participate in relevant student organizations can join the American Institute of Architecture Students, Kennesaw’s chapter of American Institute of Architecture Students or the National Association of Minority Architecture Students.
Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD)
Students in Savannah can minor in architecture or earn NAAB-accredited bachelor’s and master’s degrees in architecture at SCAD. The minor in architecture requires 40 credits. Students complete classes in architectural basics, building technology, digital design and architecture studio.
In the bachelor’s program, students take 35 credits of foundational courses like drawing, 3D design and various studio classes focused on architectural basics. The core bachelor’s curriculum consists of additional design studio classes, building technology, architecture history and digital design. More than 30 faculty members teach classes in this program.
University of Georgia (UGA)
Those who want to study landscape architecture can find an undergraduate and a graduate program in Athens at UGA. The 5-year bachelor’s program prepares students for licensure; although, students may need to acquire an additional 18 months of work experience after graduation. Courses may cover landscape architecture history, site design, sustainability, materials and several design studio classes. Each student also completes an internship and senior project.
Each year, UGA accepts 16 students into its Master of Landscape Architecture program. The program can last 1-3 years, depending on each student’s previous education background. Regardless of program duration, students can expect to complete studio courses and a thesis. Additionally, students can customize their curricula so it focuses on a specific aspect of landscape architecture like golf course design, land preservation or urban planning.
The university has a chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architecture, and students can also join the Multicultural Students in Landscape Architecture organization. The College of Environment and Design awards scholarships to students completing programs in the college, including landscape architect majors. Also, study abroad opportunities are available each year in Costa Rica, Corona and Croatia.
Career Requirements
To work as an architect in Georgia, registration is required. The Georgia Board of Architects and Interior Designers registers individuals as architects if they have completed a National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB)-accredited degree program, satisfied practical training requirements and passed an NCARB-approved exam.
The Georgia Board of Landscape Architects regulates licensure of landscape architects. To become licensed, individuals must pass the Landscape Architect Registration Exam and a state exam. Eligibility requirements for the exam include having a board-approved bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture and at least 18 months of professional experience or having an approved-postgraduate degree in landscape architecture.
